DAVIS, Calif. – After its thrilling victory vs. Northern Iowa in last Saturday's Second Round home game, the program's first-ever FCS playoff event, No. 6 UC Davis will face No. 3 Eastern Washington in a postseason battle between Big Sky Conference teams.
Saturday's kickoff at Roos Field will take place at 1 p.m. Fans can watch this quarterfinal matchup on their cell phone, tablet, or smart TV on ESPN3; as was the case last weekend at Aggie Stadium, Trey Bender and Forrest Conoly will provide play-by-play commentary and analysis live from Cheney, Wash.
Aggie football fans can also listen to Scott Marsh (PBP) and Doug Kelly's (Analyst) call on 1380 AM KTKZ, or online through KTKZ's TuneIn channel. Live stats and in-game Twitter updates are also available.
Both teams will keep an eye on the other quarterfinal, on their half of the bracket, when Weber State hosts Maine Friday night. If Maine wins, Saturday's UC Davis-EWU winner will host the Black Bears the following weekend. However, if Weber State protects its home field, either the Aggies or the Eagles will head to Ogden, Utah, to face the Wildcats in another Big Sky semifinal clash.
During the regular season, both UC Davis and Eastern Washington finished with 9-2 overall and 7-1 league records to share this year's conference championship with Weber State, who also posted identical marks.
In a game that features two of the nation's top offenses — the Eagles and Aggies are ranked No. 4 and No. 7 nationally with their 44.9 and 40.6 ppg averages; at 326.6 yards per game, UC Davis' passing offense is No. 3 in the NCAA while Eastern Washington is ranked No. 20 at 272.0 ypg — Saturday's quarterfinal also features a couple unique factors.
Since these teams squared off in the regular season, just a few weeks ago, this is the first playoff rematch involving Big Sky teams since 2014 when EWU hosted Montana that season.
UC Davis has everything to gain and nothing to lose since it is competing in its second-ever FCS playoff game, and first on the road. Conversely, Eastern Washington has not played a road playoff game since 2009, and is 11-4 in the 15 home games since.
For the first time in Big Sky history, three league teams advanced to the quarterfinal round. All three teams finished with top 10 rankings and collectively earned three of the top eight seeds from the playoff committee, which means that fans can expect another exciting playoff matchup featuring two of the top teams in the nation.
