Aggies dominant in return from holiday break

Bertsch leads three in double figures with 22 points, moves into eighth on the Big West career scoring list

DAVIS, Calif. — Host UC Davis shot 54 percent from the field overall and hit nearly 56 percent of its shots from beyond the arc on the day, rolling to its fifth consecutive victory thanks to a 92-42 triumph over visiting Dominican University on Saturday afternoon at The Pavilion.

The Aggies wrap up non-conference play with a 6-1 mark in the month of December and an 8-5 record overall heading into their Big West Conference opener at UC Riverside on Jan. 5.

Led by 11 points from Julia Razo and 10 more from Natalie Diaz — the latter of whom entered the day as the nation's leading scorer in Division II — the Penguins fell to 7-3 overall.

Senior biomedical engineering major Morgan Bertsch finished with a game-high 22 points and seven rebounds, hitting 9-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the line in only 17 minutes. In the process, the Santa Rosa, Calif., native moved past Cal Poly's Kristina Santiago into eighth place on the Big West's all-time scoring chart with 1,970 points — just 30 back of becoming only the eighth player in the history of the league to reach 2,000 for a career.

Junior human development major Cierra McKeown added a career-high 17 points on 5-of-6 from beyond the arc — including sinking a half-court heave at the buzzer to close out the first quarter — while senior psychology major Karley Eaton added 11 points and five assists, the former just one shy of her career best set against Saint Mary's.

The Aggies finished with 28 assists on their 34 makes from the field, led by a career-high eight from sophomore cell biology major Cierra Hall. The total as a team was just two shot of the school single-game record of 30 set against Quincy on Nov. 19, 1993.

Freshman biological sciences major Kayla Konrad added a career-high 11 rebounds in the win, helping UC Davis to a 59-24 advantage on the glass and the team's second-highest rebounding total of the season.

Leading wire-to-wire for the fourth time this season, the Aggies opened the game on an 11-2 run and limited Dominican to just four first-quarter points, leading 48-13 at the break and never looking back. Dominican hit just 23 percent from the field and 3-of-22 (.136) from beyond the arc for the game as Razo's four field goals paced the Penguins.

Of the 13 players who entered the game for UC Davis, 11 of those finished in the scoring column. The Aggies also drained a season-high 15 three's for the game, marking the third consecutive contest finishing in double figures in that category and the most since they tied a school record with 17 three-pointers against Washington State in last year's season opener.
