DAVIS, Calif. – If you are a football fan, not just a supporter of either team playing in the Big Sky's marquee matchup of the weekend involving UC Davis and Eastern Washington, Saturday cannot arrive fast enough.
With a victory, the Aggies will clinch, at minimum, a share of this year's Big Sky title, with an opportunity to become the outright champion later that day, if Weber State and Idaho State both lose their respective games, or the following week when Sacramento State visits Aggie Stadium for this year's 12 p.m. Causeway Classic.
For Eastern Washington, this key league contest is an opportunity for it to send its senior class out on a positive note, post an undefeated regular season home record, and pull even with the Aggies, who sit atop the Big Sky standings alone in first place with the league's only perfect conference record.
Each team possesses a potent offensive and suffocating defensive unit. Each have recorded eye-popping numbers, on a consistent basis, all season long (see stats and rankings below) that validate their respective reputations as one of the top programs in the nation.
Whether it is their stats, national rankings, place in the conference standings, results against quality opponents this season, or numerous other quantifiable figure, Saturday's game, plain and simple, is going to be a fun one to watch that involves two talented teams battling for the same goal that afternoon.
UC Davis football fans, and fans of the sport across the country, can follow Saturday's game from Roos Field in Cheney, Wash., on Pluto TV (channel 234), online at
WatchBigSky.com, listen to Scott Marsh and Doug Kelly's call on Sports 1140 KHTK or through TuneIn's website/app by searching the phrase "KHTK."
QUICK HITS
• For UC Davis, this weekend's mission is simple: win and clinch, at minimum, a share of the 2018 Big Sky Championship — the program's first conference crown since 2009 when it competed in the Great West Conference
• In sole possession of first place, with the only undefeated record among all Big Sky teams, the Aggies control their own destiny and can win the Big Sky crown outright by winning their last two games, or with a win at EWU + Weber State and Idaho State losses
• A league title is not the only thing both teams are fighting for entering the final weeks of conference play since both are battling for the Big Sky's automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs, a opening-round bye and the easiest possible postseason path
• With UC Davis ranked No. 3, and Eastern Washington ranked No. 9 when the NCAA Selection Committee unveiled its top 10 list on Halloween, the loser of Saturday's game will most likely compete in a First Round matchup, with the winner placing themselves in prime position for a tournament bye in the opening round
• Saturday's game is EWU's final home game of the season; the program will honor its 27-member senior class before kickoff
• Saturday's scoreboard operator better arrive to Roos Field ready for a workout because this matchup features the Big Sky's top two offenses in UC Davis, ranked No. 1 and averaging 43.1 points per game, and Eastern Washington, ranked No. 2 at 40.4 ppg
• Two of the team's top three defenses are also featured in this weekend's marquee matchup: EWU's opponents are averaging a league-low 21.1 points per game; UC Davis' defense is holding its opponents to a 26.0 ppg average
• In a game that features two of the league's top three teams in passing offense (UC Davis is No. 1, 326.2 ypg; EWU is No. 3, 280.8 ypg), total offense (Eastern Washington is No. 1 at 530.7 ypg vs. No. 3 UC Davis' 485.0 average) and rushing defense (EWU is No. 2 by allowing 144.7 ypg vs. No. 3 UC Davis' 173.4 ypg average), it is no surprise that football fans will direct their attention to Cheney, Washington, even though there are six other games taking place on Saturday
• The Eagles are 4-0 at home this season and have lost just 10 games at Roos Field (regular season and playoff) since 2010
• Known for its red turf that was installed before the start of the 2010 season, EWU won 48 games at home since 2010 and dropped only six regular season contests
SERIES HISTORY
• Saturday's game is the seventh meeting between UC Davis and Eastern Washington, and the fifth to take place on the Eagles' turf
• UC Davis dropped all six previously played games vs. EWU
