Box Score
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — A goal off a deflection in the 26th minute stood up for host UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday night as the Gauchos edged visiting UC Davis, 1-0, at Harder Stadium in Santa Barbara, Calif.
The Aggies fell to 8-4-3 overall and 1-3-1 in Big West Conference play heading into this weekend's home finale against Cal State Fullerton on Saturday (Oct. 20) at 4 p.m. UCSB, which had lost its last three meetings with UC Davis, improved to 8-6-1 overall and 2-2-1 in league play.
A 12-3 shot advantage — including a 7-1 lead in shots on goal — went in favor of the Gauchos, but it was a fortuitous bounce off a shot by Thibault Candia at the 25:09 mark that provided the only score of the match.
Candia had a cross knocked down by a UC Davis defender and come right back to him at the left side of the six, where he tried to chip another ball back into the box that deflected up off the heel of the Aggie defender once again, kiss off the back right post, and curl in for the 1-0 lead.
UC Santa Barbara put six more attempts on frame, but junior global disease biology major
Wallis Lapsley was up to the task, finishing with six saves on the night. The performance gives the Seattle, Wash., native 60 saves for the season — just nine back of Omar Zeenni's Division I program single-season record set in 2012.
UC Davis' best chance to score came in the 14th minute as senior managerial economics major
Matt Baringer found himself loose on the right side, unleashing a shot that Gaucho goalkeeper Ben Roach was able to knock out of the air and catch on the bounce to keep the sheet clean.
Sophomore managerial economics major
Jacob Rudolph in the 56th minute and freshman cognitive science major
Kyle Marcotte in the 68th minute also had attempts, but both were blocked away by the UCSB defense.
