DAVIS, Calif. - If you ask any basketball coach about the best, or most time-honored strategy for a successful season, you will most likely hear the following key points:
- Success starts on defense
- Win games on the road
- Create and strengthen team chemistry
- Play your best basketball when postseason play approaches
- Protect your home court
By executing each of these parts efficiently, in addition to successfully balancing their academic coursework at the sixth-ranked public school in the nation, UC Davis basketball has shown firsthand that student-athletes can thrive on the court, in the classroom, and enjoy an unparallelled undergraduate experience.
During the Jim Les era, UC Davis won a lot of games on the road due to a defense that ranks among the nation's best on an annual basis. Thanks to the program's structure, student-athletes create a strong brotherhood each and every year. This ultimately translates to a slew of victories earned throughout the month of March, as attested by two league championships and the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance taking place throughout the last three seasons.
And if you ask any Aggie basketball season ticket holder or fan, they will quickly admit to enjoying a consistent experience when heading home after games that take place inside the Pavilion: celebrating a UC Davis victory.
When the Aggies return to Hamilton Court Wednesday night to face Long Beach State, they will look for their 17th home victory in a row (on Jan. 17, no less). This is the fifth-longest home win streak in the country and one that places the Aggies among college basketball's top programs, such as Kentucky (16 wins), Purdue (18) and Cincinnati (35, the longest in the nation).
From the start of the 2014-15 season, throughout the opening weeks of this year's league slate, no mainland Big West team won more of its games at home than UC Davis (38), a school that provides the ideal combination of Division I athletics, elite academics and personal growth. Within the conference, no team holds a higher win percentage than the Aggies and their .844 clip.
If anyone wants to know why UC Davis enjoys a home court advantage like no other, visit the Pavilion for Wednesday's 7 p.m. league tilt, or any other home game this season to see why it is so difficult for opposing teams to enjoy their Northern California trip.
When the Aggies host a nationally televised home game, as has been the case numerous times (and on a yearly basis since the 2012-13 season), the Pavilion provides a winning atmosphere for the Aggies. Unlike other Big West arenas, basketball fans and pundits from across the country will always see a capacity crowd cheering on the Aggies whenever ESPN visits campus. Even during non-televised games, strong support from the local community members, fans and students turns UC Davis' home into a place opposing teams visit reluctantly.
From longtime supporters, the student-supported Aggie Pack, casual basketball fans or families looking for a fun night (or afternoon) for everyone at an affordable price, UC Davis basketball quickly turned itself from a program on the rise into one of the most well-respected in the country by following a five-part formula for success. And throughout this process, supporters of Aggie basketball played a key role in the program's evolution.
As evident throughout UC Davis' current 16-game win streak, every individual sporting the Aggie blue and gold, or visits the Pavilion on game day are an integral part of its success, and will continue to provide the most challenging environment possible for visiting teams from opening tip until the final buzzer each and every season.
