DAVIS, Calif. - Following a scoreless first period for UC Davis, senior Madison Cohen found the back of the cage just 10 minutes into the second half, placing the Aggies within striking distance of the Spartans. But the Aggies were unable to close the gap, resulting in a 2-1 win for Michigan State over UC Davis.
The Aggies will face No. 5 Syracuse on Monday with an 0-1 record. The Spartans will head to Berkeley with a 1-1 mark.
The game remained scoreless for the first 12 minutes of play before the Spartans took an early lead. Their first goal came off a deflection just outside the left post at 12:06 in the first period and the second came three-and-a-half minutes later on a similar play.
Sophomore goalkeeper Chelsea Bigelow collected two saves on the day, recording one in each half.
The second period saw both defensive and offensive highlights for the Aggies, with Kelley Kramer notching a defensive save and Madison Cohen putting the Aggies on the board with 25 minutes to play.
Saturday's match also marked the official debut for UC Davis freshman Emily Chen, Nicola Prebble, Shea Gavin, Madison Theodore, Daniella Schoenfeld, Summer Borsack, and Carli Colyer. Prebble and Gavin earned starting positions in the lineup, Chen, Theodore, Colyer, Schoenfeld, and Borsack all saw significant minutes coming off the bench.
