Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. -- Junior right-hander Matt Blais allowed just one run on four hits over 7.2 innings of work and UC Davis manufactured single runs in the first, fifth, and eighth innings, on Monday afternoon, holding off visiting Pacific for a 3-2 victory in its 2017 home finale at Phil Swimley Field at Dobbins Stadium.

The Aggies head into their final weekend series of the regular season with a 20-28 overall record, opening a set at UC Irvine on Thursday (May 25) at 6:30 p.m. The Tigers finished their season at 18-35 overall.

Battling through temperatures that reached into the mid-90s at first pitch, Blais (1-3) earned his first win of the season, retiring nine straight after Pacific had scored its first run, and struck out three without a walk while throwing only 89 pitches (61 strikes).

Jordon Gonzalez (1-2) -- the fifth of eight Tiger arms on the day, each of whom worked only one inning each -- was charged with the loss, allowing a run on two hits and walking one in his lone inning of work.

After stranding a runner in scoring position to start the game, the Aggies broke through first with a run in the home half on Ignacio Diaz's RBI single to centerfield, scoring Mason Novak from second base for the 1-0 advantage. A run-scoring single by Keaton Glover brought Pacific even in the fifth, but UC Davis pulled the run back in the home half on Cameron Olson's bases-loaded sac fly to make it 2-1, and the Aggies added an important insurance run on Cameron Briggs' RBI single to center in the eighth, scoring Ryan Anderson for a two-run advantage.

An infield single by Matt Tarantino got a rally started in the ninth for Pacific, and he would come around to score two batters later against closer Zach Stone on Danny Mayer's RBI single through the left side that sliced the UC Davis lead to just one. Stone, however, buckled down and earned his fourth save of the year, getting a ground ball to third to end the game in an efficient two hours and 16 minutes.

Novak finished 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored to pace the Aggies, logging his fourth multi-hit game in his last five contests and extending his hitting streak to six games in the process. Novak's streak is now the longest active streak by a UC Davis hitter as Ryan Anderson's 19-game streak came to an end after an 0-for-4 day.

Tarantino and Glover each accounted for two hits to lead the Tigers.
