PLAY BALL!: After playing four games against nationally ranked opponents last week on the road, the UC Davis baseball team (3-7 overall) opens its longest home stand of the season on Wednesday afternoon (March 8) at 2:30 p.m., welcoming Penn State to Dobbins Stadium for a single game. The Aggies then open a three-game weekend series against UConn beginning Friday (March 10) at 2 p.m., before hosting Saint Mary's on Tuesday (March 14) at 2:30 p.m. to close out the home stand.

ABOUT THE NITTANY LIONS: Entering the fourth game of a seven-game California trip that ends with a series at Sacramento State this weekend, Penn State begins the week with a 4-6 overall record after taking two-of-three from Pacific last weekend… The Nittany Lions won the first two games of the series by the scores of 11-4 and 11-2 before falling, 6-1, in the finale that ended a three-game winning streak… Penn State opened the year by being swept at TCU before splitting a four-game series against Xavier… Sophomore outfielder Jordan Bowersox leads the offense, hitting .439 in 10 games, scoring six runs with four doubles and driving in eight… The Nittany Lions are hitting just .240 as a team, but holding opponents to a .237 average… Wednesday's scheduled starter, left-hander Taylor Lehman, is 0-2 with an 8.10 ERA in four appearances (two starts), allowing eight runs in 6.2 innings, striking out seven and walking six.

SERIES NOTES: Wednesday's meeting marks the first between UC Davis and Penn State.

ABOUT THE HUSKIES: Connecticut enters the week with a 6-4 overall record following two wins in three games at the Stetson Tournament in Florida last weekend… The Huskies opened with a, 4-3, loss to Western Michigan before posting a win over the host Hatters (9-3) and Saint Joseph's (11-0)… The weekend series against the Aggies opens a seven-game West Coast trip that includes a single game at Santa Clara and a three-game series at BYU… Sophomore catcher Zac Susi leads all regulars with a .371 average with nine runs scored, three doubles, a triple, a home run, and a team-high 10 RBI… The Connecticut pitching staff has posted a 3.48 ERA in 10 games this season, holding opponents to a .220 average and striking out 122 in 38 innings… Junior RHP William Montgomerie leads the staff with a 3-0 record in three starts with a 1.47 ERA, striking out 36 in 18.1 innings.

SERIES NOTES: This weekend's three-game series marks the first between UC Davis and Connecticut.

ABOUT THE GAELS: Saint Mary's enters the week with a 9-3 record following a mid-week, 4-0, win over Nevada to cap a five-game home stand… The Gaels head to Nashville, Tenn., to take on Vanderbilt over the weekend before traveling to Davis next Tuesday… Saint Mary's has won six of its last seven, also posting a 7-3 win over UNLV earlier this week after taking two-of-three from Grand Canyon… Freshman outfielder Joe Vranesh leads all regulars with a .368 average, helping the Gaels hit .297 as a team overall… All told, Saint Mary's has five starters hitting .300 or better on the year, while the pitching staff has posted a 4.25 ERA through 12 games with a .283 average against.

SERIES NOTES: According to records that date back to the 1962 season, Saint Mary's leads the all-time series with UC Davis, 56-44-1… Next Tuesday's meeting between the Aggies and the Gaels will be the second between the two programs this season after Saint Mary's opened its regular season with a 6-4 win over UC Davis at the UNLV Classic on Feb. 17… The two teams will meet one more time on May 2 at Dobbins Stadium… With their win earlier this season, the Gaels have won three straight in the series with the Aggies… UC Davis' last win in the series came on March 31, 2015, with an 11-2 win at home… The Aggies lead the series at home, 23-22, with the locations of 22 games in the history of the series unknown.

AGGIES INVADE RALEY FIELD: UC Davis will host Big West Conference rival Cal Poly at Raley Field -- home of the San Francisco Giants' Triple-A affiliate Sacramento River Cats -- in the second game of their three-game series on April 14. After having played the role of the visiting team four times in Causeway rivalry games against Sacramento State at Raley Field, the Aggies will host a game at the ballpark for the first time since 2005, when they welcomed reigning NCAA champion Cal State Fullerton for the opener of a three-game series against the Titans.
