Big inning helps Beavers complete sweep

Box Score

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- UC Davis jumped out to an early lead with a run in the first, but host and No. 7-ranked Oregon State used a four-run sixth to rally late, lifting the Beavers to a, 4-1, win over the Aggies and a series sweep on Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium.

Playing its fourth straight game against a nationally-ranked opponent, UC Davis fell to 3-6 overall heading into Monday's contest at Oregon. First pitch against the Ducks is scheduled for 6 p.m. at PK Park in Eugene.

Oregon State, winners of five straight, improved to 10-1 overall on the season.

Senior right-hander Justin Mullins (0-1) was solid to start the game, allowing just four base runners and carrying a shutout into the sixth before the Beavers finally got to him. He stranded the bases loaded in the first and allowed only a lead-off single to Michael Gretler to start the second before retiring 13 consecutive hitters from the second to sixth innings.

The Aggies got their only run of the game in the first to stake Mullins to the early lead. Alex Aguiar opened the game with an infield single off starter Jake Thompson, and came all the way around to score from first two batters later when Cameron Olson doubled to centerfield for the 1-0 lead.

UC Davis put runners in scoring position in the second, fourth, and sixth innings, to try and extend the lead, but came up empty. Ryan Hooper singled and stole second base in the second, and back-to-back singles by Olson and Ryan Anderson in the fourth went for naught after Oregon State came up with an inning-ending double play to erase the threat.

A walk to Aguiar to lead-off the sixth knocked Thompson from the game in favor of Jake Mulholland (1-0), who got a fly ball and a strikeout after a sacrifice to end the inning, part of a run of 12 consecutive batters set down by the Beavers' reliever until Anderson singled with two outs in the ninth.

Oregon State then put together its rally in the sixth with one out, drawing back-to-back walks to put a pair on. After a line-out for the second out of the inning, another walk loaded the bases and knocked Mullins from the game. That brought up Gretler, who was hit by a pitch to drive home the tying run, before Cadyn Grenier dealt the big blow, a bases-clearing triple into right centerfield off reliever Chris Brown for the final 4-1 advantage.

After putting two more on to lead-off the seventh, reliever Blake Peters retired the side in order to end the threat and held the Beavers to only a two-out single in the eighth to keep his side close.

Anderson's two hits gave him multiple hits in all three games of the series against Oregon State, and extended his team-best hitting streak to seven consecutive games dating back to an 0-for-3 day at UNLV on Feb. 19. He finished the series against the Beavers hitting 6-for-11 (.545) with a run scored and two RBI, recording his fifth multi-hit game of the year on Sunday, and reaching base for the ninth straight game to start the year.

Olson also added a pair of hits for his first multi-hit game of the season and collected his third extra-base hit of the year -- accounting for half his six hits thus far in 2017.
