NABC bestows All-District honors to Moneke

March 22, 2017

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Junior forward Chima Moneke, the Big West Conference's Newcomer of the Year and Tournament Most Valuable Player, added another award to this season's haul after the National Association of Basketball Coaches named him to its list of All-District selections as announced by the organization on Wednesday.

The Big West's top rebounder - his 9.5 rebounds per game average is two more than the league's second-ranked individual - led all players in six different categories: total rebounds (341), defensive rebounds (249), rebounds per game, blocks (51), blocks per game (1.4) and double-doubles (14). In addition to his conference-high 17 double figure rebound games, Moneke also finished his first season in a UC Davis uniform ranked No. 6 among all BWC players in scoring (14.6 ppg).

Throughout the regular season, and in both postseason tournaments, Moneke played a central role in helping UC Davis make its inaugural appearance, and collect its first NCAA Tournament victory in the program's history.

In the Big West Conference Tournament semifinals vs. Cal State Fullerton, it was his court savvy that lead to his buzzer-beating putback, in overtime, that earned the Aggies' first-ever berth in the league's championship game. Less than 24 hours later, Moneke held the event's Most Valuable Trophy in one hand and a piece of the net in the other after UC Davis punched its ticket to the NCAA Tournament thanks to a three-point victory over UC Irvine.

A national audience watched the Canberra, Australia native collect his 14th double-double of the season when he finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds, both game-highs, in the first NCAA Division I Tournament game in UC Davis' history. That effort led to a four-point victory in the team's First Four matchup against North Carolina Central, and a trip to Tulsa to face Kansas in the Midwest Regional's First Round.

In that game against the Jayhawks - the Tournament's No. 2 overall and Regional's No. 1-seeded team - Moneke led all Aggies with 20 points, on 8 of 13 shooting, and nine rebounds.

Moneke ended his debut season at UC Davis by setting nine new single-season records: double-doubles (14), field goals made (192), total rebounds (341), offensive rebounds (92), defensive rebounds (249), rebounds per game (9.5), offensive rebounds per game (2.6), defensive rebounds per game (6.9) and blocked shots (51).
