DAVIS, Calif. -- Junior left-hander Orlando Razo struck out a school Division I Era record 13 batters while allowing just one hit over seven shutout innings, and the UC Davis offense exploded in a seven-run seventh inning to break open a close game, lifting the host Aggies to a, 9-4, win over Utah Valley on Saturday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.
Pounding out a season-high 12 hits on the day, UC Davis improved to 2-2 overall on the year, knotting its series with the Wolverines at a game apiece heading into Sunday's series finale at 1 p.m. at Dobbins Stadium. Utah Valley fell to 1-4 overall, striking for four runs late against the Aggie bullpen.
Razo (2-0) allowed only four base runners on the day en route to his second win in as many starts, breaking Dayne Quist's previous single-game school Division I Era record of 12 set against Utah on Feb. 17, 2012. The San Mateo, Calif., native retired 15 consecutive hitters from the third to the seventh innings, and struck out at least two batters in six of his seven frames -- including striking out the side in the seventh -- to surpass his previous career high of seven strikeouts at Portland on Feb. 28, 2015.
Jake Mayer (0-2) suffered the loss for Utah Valley, tagged for two runs in the sixth after throwing five shutout innings to start the contest. He scattered six hits and stuck out one before being lifted after 5 2/3 innings of work.
A walk to Cameron Olson and a single by Ryan Anderson kicked-off the decisive sixth inning as both moved into scoring position on a wild pitch for Mark Cardinalli, who laced a single to center to break up the shutout, scoring Olson for the 1-0 lead. With runners at the corners, senior Ignacio Diaz laid down a perfect squeeze to the right side, enough to plate Anderson with a second run and a 2-0 advantage.
After Razo set the side down in order in the top of the inning, the offense took control in the home half of the seventh as the Aggies sent 11 batters to plate to break the game wide open. UC Davis loaded the bases with one out for Olson, who lined a bases-clearing triple off the wall in deep center field off reliever Marco Briones for a 5-0 lead, and Anderson followed with an RBI single to right to make it a six-run game.
Cameron Briggs piled on four batters later after another pitching change, slamming a bases-clearing double to center field for his second hit of the day and a 9-0 lead.
RBI singles by Nick Simmons and Trevor Peterson, along with a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch, got the Wolverines on the board, but junior Zach Stone shut the door, getting a strikeout and a pair of ground balls to end the eighth, and a pair of fly balls around a strikeout in a 1-2-3 ninth, to end the game.
Anderson, Cardinalli, Diaz, and Briggs, all finished with two hits for the Aggies as eight of the nine starters in the batting order finished with at least one in the game.
