DAVIS, Calif. - Corey Hawkins, one of the most talented players in program history to compete for UC Davis basketball, will continue his professional career with Vef Riga, a member of the Latvian Basketball League, as announced on Thursday.
Based in Riga, Latvia, Vef Riga won five of the last seven LBL titles and enters the 2017-18 season as defending champions.
Hawkins joins his new team after averaging 10.2 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.1 steals per game for Talent Giants Antwerp, an organization that competes in Belgium's EuroMillions Basketball League.
While at UC Davis, Hawkins led the Aggies to their first Big West Conference championship and Division I postseason appearance when they faced Stanford in the 2015 National Invitation Tournament. The program also experienced the biggest turnaround, from one season to the next, by finishing with a +16 win differential once the 2014-15 season concluded.
Hawkins finished his career at UC Davis as the program's all-time No. 2 scorer with 1,694 career points, the highest total recorded by a three-year letterwinner, and a NCAA three-point shooting crown by posting a NCAA-high .488 percentage from behind the arc. The first UC Davis student-athlete to collect Big West Player of the Year honors also earned two scoring titles throughout his three seasons as an Aggie.
UC Davis will continue its season-opening five-game road swing on Saturday when it visits Utah Valley for Saturday's 2 p.m. (PT) game. A win will extend the team's current win streak to three heading into Tuesday's Causeway Cup rivalry matchup at the Golden 1 Center.
