Defense keeps Ags within striking distance vs. Indiana

Box Score Sept. 5, 2016

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Even though Indiana scored two goals in the first half of Monday's non-conference match, UC Davis' defense kept the Aggies within striking distance throughout the entire afternoon. Lauren Mewes and Kate Young earned the first defensive save of their respective careers, Beth Lee set a new career high by collecting nine saves, and the Hoosiers were held scoreless throughout the entire second half in a neutral-site contest that UC Davis dropped by a 2-0 score.

The Aggies will remain in Columbus for their next matchup, and enter Wednesday's event at Ohio State (the host school for Monday's event) with a 1-2 record. Indiana, the first team listed in the Penn Monto National Field Hockey Coaches Association's national poll that UC Davis faced this season, improves to 2-2.

Maddie Latino gave Indiana an early 1-0 lead after scoring 74 seconds after the opening whistle. Even though Kate Barber doubled her team's lead in the 32nd minute, Young's defensive save, which took place with 24 seconds remaining in the first half, ensured that the Hoosiers' advantage remained at two goals entering halftime.

With the Hoosiers responsible for the first five shots taken after play resumed, it was Mewes' brilliant play in front of the Aggies' cage that ultimately thwarted another IU scoring opportunity. In the 51st minute, she blocked what would have been another goal, punched the ball to safety, kept her team's deficit to a more manageable margin and preserved its chance to force overtime (or with a flurry of goals late in the match, take the lead) since there was still 20 minutes remaining in regulation.

UC Davis' season-long road swing will continue Wednesday afternoon at Ohio State, another Aggie opponent that received votes in the inaugural national poll of the year. Action from Buckeye Field will begin at 12 p.m. Pacific/3 p.m. Eastern. In addition to live stats, Ohio State will provide a video stream of this match for a small fee; both links are available at UCDavisAggies.com.
