July 27, 2016 DAVIS, Calif. -- Coming off a 2015-16 season for the record books on the courts, three members of the UC Davis men's tennis team were honored for their work off of it, named to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Scholar-Athlete list on July 25.
Senior aerospace science and engineering major Brett Bacharach, along with junior animal biology major Eli Whittle and sophomore economics major Tommy Lam, were honored by the organization. It was the second such honor for Whittle during his Aggie career after earning a spot on the team as a sophomore in 2015, and the first such awards for both Bacharach and Lam.
The trio gives the Aggies 12 different honorees for a total of 15 awards during the program's Division I Era, and joins Toki Sherbakov and Nick Lopez as those who have earned multiple awards from the ITA in that span. In all, UC Davis has twice been honored as a team (2008 and 2009) and has had 20 different student-athletes earn a total of 33 ITA academic awards since 1982.
To be eligible, each award winner must be a varsity letter winner, have a grade point average of at least 3.50 for the current academic year, and have been enrolled at their institution for at last two semesters.
Bacharach was an All-Big West Conference second team selection in doubles and a member of the all-academic team after finishing 17-13 overall in singles at the No. 2, 3, and 4, spots in the lineup, while posting a 16-12 mark in doubles, including an 11-5 record at the No. 2 spot. He won 11 straight singles contests at one point in the season and was named the Big West Player of the Week on Feb. 10 after finishing a combined 7-0 in singles and doubles.
In his second season as an Aggie, Whittle was also an All-Big West second team selection in doubles alongside Bacharach, finishing 11-8 overall in singles play and a 15-10 mark in doubles, including a 6-5 record at the No. 2 spot.
Lam, who also earned Big West All-Academic Team honors, finished 14-10 overall in singles, including a 9-4 record in duals, and led the Aggies with a 23-6 overall record in doubles -- including a 12-4 mark in duals. He teamed up with Bryce McKelvie to finish 10-1 at No. 3 doubles and a combined 17-2 record as a tandem on the year.
UC Davis finished the 2015-16 season with a 17-7 overall record and a 3-2 mark in Big West play, setting a new program Division I standard for wins in a single season and posting the highest win total in a quarter century. Led by NCAA Tournament qualifier and Big West Player of the Year Alec Adamson, the Aggies finished the season ranked No. 71 in the nation according to the final ITA poll -- and reached a program-best No. 49 in the country on Feb. 23 -- and gained the semifinals of the conference tournament for the third consecutive season.
