SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly scored six times over the final three innings to erase a one-run deficit -- including three times in the decisive seventh -- lifting the host Mustangs to a 10-5 victory and a Big West Conference series win over UC Davis in the regular season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Baggett Stadium.
Junior Mark Cardinalli finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI for the Aggies, who finished the 2016 season at 17-36 overall and 5-19 in conference play. Cal Poly, which held a 15-13 advantage in the hit column for the game, finished the year at 32-25 overall and 12-12 in Big West play.
Cardinalli was one of three Aggies with multiple hits on the day as Guillermo Salazar and Cameron Briggs each finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI for the second straight game, while senior Tanner Bily finished 1-for-5 at the top of the lineup to end his UC Davis career on a career-best 12-game hitting streak.
After spotting the Mustangs three runs on a bases-clearing double by John Schuknecht in the first, the Aggies responded to score four straight runs to take their first lead of the day. Briggs had an RBI single in the third to break-up the shutout, and UC Davis had three straight RBI singles by Cardinalli, Salazar, and Briggs, in the fourth for a 4-3 advantage.
A home run by Kevin Morgan in the home half of the fourth tied the game for Cal Poly, but the Aggies got the run back on an RBI single by Salazar after back-to-back hits by Spencer Henderson and Logan Denholm in the fifth to regain the lead.
That lead lasted until the sixth as the Mustangs tied the game once again on a single by Michael Sanderson, and took the lead for good the very next inning, loading the bases with two outs and scoring the go-ahead run on a wild pitch for a 6-5 lead. A double by Kyle Marinconz plated a pair and Cal Poly tacked on two more in the eighth for the final advantage.
Slater Lee (3-1) -- the third pitcher of the day for the Mustangs -- earned the win in relief, throwing 2.2 shutout innings, allowing just four hits and striking out a pair. Justin Calomeni finished off the game for his eighth save of the year, striking out a pair over two perfect innings.
Freshman Chris Brown (1-5) -- the second of five pitchers on the day for the Aggies -- took the loss, allowing two runs on four hits over 2.2 innings of work.
Ryan Anderson added a single to end the year on an eight-game hitting streak as eight of the nine UC Davis starters finished with hits. Nick Meyer was 4-for-5 with a pair of runs scored to lead the Mustangs' offense.
