Box Score

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Senior left-hander Spencer Henderson pitched into the ninth for his second win of the season and UC Davis had five hits and took advantage of three Cal Poly errors during a huge seven-run fifth inning, helping the visiting Aggies even their Big West Conference series with an 11-5 victory over the Mustangs in game two on Friday night at Baggett Stadium in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

UC Davis snapped its season-long eight-game losing streak with the win, improving to 17-35 overall and 5-18 in league play. Cal Poly, which committed five errors overall on the night, fell to 31-25 overall and 11-12 in conference games.

Henderson (2-5) nearly went the distance, allowing five runs -- three of those in the final inning with a nine-run lead and the game out of reach -- on five hits over 8.1 innings of work before a two-run double in the ninth ended his bid for a complete game. Freshman left-hander Chris Brown then came on to get the final two outs on a strikeout and pop-up to secure the win.

The Mustangs' Erich Uelmen (5-3) suffered the loss, allowing nine runs -- only one of those earned -- on seven hits, striking out four over 4.1 innings of work.

A two-run double by Brad Pluschkell plated a pair of unearned runs in the third to get the scoring started, but the majority of the damage was done in the fifth as the Aggies finished off a run of nine unanswered scores, plating seven runs in the inning en route to a 9-0 advantage.

Freshman Cameron Briggs got the rally started by reaching on an error and moving all the way to third when the throw went wild. Senior Tanner Bily followed, extending his hitting streak to career-high tying 11 games in the process, with an infield single to drive in a run and make it 3-0.

Cameron Olson followed with a one-out walk, and an infield single by Logan Denholm loaded the bases for Ryan Anderson, who laced a single to left, scoring Bily for the 4-0 advantage. A fielding error allowed another run to come home, while Guillermo Salazar (RBI single) and Briggs (two-run double) finished the inning with run-scoring hits for a 9-0 lead.

Henderson held the Mustangs hitless -- retiring eight-in-a-row at one point -- until they finally broke through with a run in the fifth, getting a one-out double by Josh George, who finished with a pair of hits, and an RBI groundout by Alec Smith to break up the shutout, and added a single run in the sixth on a run-scoring ground ball to make it 9-2.

An RBI single by Mark Cardinalli and a fielder's choice with a runner at third off the bat of Salazar got the runs back for the Aggies in the ninth before Cal Poly made it interesting with three runs in the home half to cap the scoring.

Cardinalli, Salazar, and Briggs, each finished with a pair of hits and two RBI apiece on the night, while eight of the nine UC Davis starters logged at least one hit.

The two teams meet in the rubber match on Saturday afternoon (May 28) at 1 p.m.
