Bily's streak rolls on as Long Beach wins series

Box Score May 21, 2016

Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. -- Visiting Long Beach State jumped out to an early lead and never let up, scoring in six of the nine innings on Saturday afternoon en route to a 14-1 win over host UC Davis and a Big West Conference series victory at Dobbins Stadium.

The loss was the sixth straight for the Aggies, who fell to 16-33 overall and 4-16 in league play, while Long Beach improved to 34-18 overall and 13-7 in conference action, winning its eighth straight.

Senior Tanner Bily and sophomore Brad Pluschkell each finished with two hits for UC Davis, which added a trio of doubles by Caleb Van Blake, Logan Denholm, and Ryan Hooper. Bily's single to lead-off the home half of the first extended his hitting streak to eight games -- his second-longest of the season -- while collecting his 14th multi-hit game of the year.

Van Blake's extra-base hit also allowed the freshman to reach base safely for the 10th consecutive contest, a run that ranks third on the team behind 16-game stretches by Bily and Cameron Olson.

Long Beach State jumped out early with a run in the first for the second consecutive game, and then plated five in the second to build a six-run lead it would not relinquish off starter Spencer Henderson (1-5). Freshman reliever Blake Hannah came in an stemmed the tide, retiring the next five straight -- including a 1-2-3 third -- and stranded the bases loaded in the fourth after a pair of walks and a single.

The Aggies got their only run in the home half of the fourth as Denholm led-off with his double down the left field line and was followed two batters later by Hooper, whose double found space in left field, to make it 6-1.

That would be as close as UC Davis would get, however, as the visitors scored eight unanswered runs -- two each in the fifth through eighth innings -- en route to the win.

Darren McCaughan (9-1) earned the win for Long Beach State, allowing the single run on six hits while striking out a pair over seven innings, while Brock Lundquist paced the Long Beach offense with a 5-for-6 day at the plate with a pair of doubles and three RBI.

The two teams meet in the third game of the series on Sunday afternoon (May 22) at 1 p.m., as UC Davis plays in front of the hometown faithful for the final time in 2016. The Aggies' senior class will be honored as part of pre game "Senior Day" festivities prior to first pitch.
