Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Freshman Logan Denholm slugged his third home run of the season and drove in a pair in support of junior right-hander Justin Mullins, who struck out six while pitching into the sixth inning on Tuesday, helping lift UC Davis to a 7-1 win over Sacramento State at John Smith Field in Sacramento.

The Aggies won for the seventh time in their last eight contests, improving to 16-26 overall and winning on the Hornets' home field for the first time since March of 2010, snapping a five-game losing streak. Sacramento State fell to 26-22 overall on the season with the loss.

Mullins (2-4) pitched well to claim his second win over the Hornets in the span of a week, scattering a single run on seven hits while striking out six without a walk over 5.2 innings of work. Freshman Chris Brown and sophomore Matt Blais then closed out the game, allowing just one hit combined and striking out three over the final 3.1 innings.

Combined, Mullins has allowed just two earned runs on 14 hits in two starts (11.2 innings) against Sacramento State this season, posting a 1.54 ERA and striking out 11 Hornets without a walk.

Jonny Palsha (0-2) suffered the loss for Sacramento State, entering in relief of starter Austin Ragsdale in the third and giving up a pair of runs on three hits in two innings. He was the second of six pitchers on the day for the Hornets -- four of whom surrendered runs to the Aggie bats.

A fielding error on a single by Cameron Olson allowed the ball to roll all the way to the wall with one out in the third, scoring teammate Alex Aguiar, who was hit by a pitch, to put UC Davis on the board first. Denholm followed with a single to center to plate Olson for the 2-0 lead and the Aggies cruised from there.

After Andrew McWilliam launched his sixth home run of the season with two outs in the home half of the third, UC Davis tacked on three runs in the fifth as Spencer Henderson and Caleb Van Blake drove home runs, and a fielding error later in the frame that should have ended the inning allowed a third run to come across to make it 5-1.

Denholm then led-off the seventh with a first-pitch shot over the left field wall and a sacrifice fly by senior Tanner Bily in the eighth capped the scoring for the Aggies. UC Davis pitchers stranded six Hornets on the base paths -- including the bases loaded in the sixth -- and the bullpen retired the final 10 batters they faced to end the game.

Van Blake joined Denholm with a pair of hits on the day as eight of the nine Aggie starters finished with hits on the day. The lone holdout was sophomore Brad Pluschkell, who had his eight-game hitting streak come to an unfortunate end.

Denholm, Aguiar, and Henderson, each extended their respective hitting streaks to six games, while Olson reached base safely for the 15th consecutive game -- tying Bily for the longest on the team this season. Denholm's two-hit day also gave him 10 multi-hit games on the season, standing second on the team behind Bily (11).

UC Davis remains on the road this weekend, resuming Big West Conference play with a three-game series at CSUN beginning on Friday (May 13) at 3:00 p.m. at Matador Field in Northridge, Calif. Games two and three are scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch on both Saturday (May 14) and Sunday (May 15).
