Olson hits for the cycle in rout of Dons

Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis senior Cameron Olson became the first Aggie to hit for the cycle in nearly 15 years, finishing 4-for-4 with a walk and four RBI to help lift his team to a 15-3 victory over visiting San Francisco on Tuesday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.

Just two days after setting a season high with 13 runs in a win over Big West Conference rival UC Riverside, UC Davis did that mark two better on Tuesday in improving to 8-15 overall and winning back-to-back games for only the second time this season.

The 15 runs were the most by the Aggies since putting up 16 runs in a win at Saint Mary's on May 14, 2013, and they posted back-to-back double-digit run totals for the first time since March 29 and 31 against UC Riverside (13-1) and Saint Mary's (11-2).

The Dons fell to 9-22 overall with the defeat.

Olson tripled and scored in the first, doubled home a run in the second, singled home a run in the sixth and saved his best for last, a towering home run off the right field pole in the seventh to drive home two and complete the cycle. Olson, who added a walk in the fourth, became the first Aggie to hit for the cycle in the program's Division I Era and the first since Ryan Coultas did so against Concordia on March 24, 2002.

It was the third multi-hit game of the season for the Yuba City, Calif., native, who now has eight extra-base hits out of 14 hits overall this year. Junior Mark Cardinalli finished 1-for-2 with a triple, two walks, and four RBI, while four other UC Davis hitters drove in runs.

Matt Blais (2-2) earned the win in relief of starter Spencer Henderson, who lasted four innings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out four in his first start of the year. Blais pitched three hitless shutout innings, walking one, and striking out two, en route to the win, combining with Ryan Steindorf and Cameron Briggs to allow just one run on three hits over the final five innings.

Grant Goodman (0-3) suffered the loss for San Francisco, allowing two runs on a hit and walking a pair in an inning of work.

A wild pitch on a dropped third strike that could have ended the inning plated Blake Valley with the first run of the game after the Dons' outfielder led-off the contest with a double to the game in right center field. That advantage would be short-lived, however, as the Aggies rallied for eight unanswered runs over the next four innings, scoring in every frame but the fifth and eighth en route to the win.

Tanner Bily walked to lead off the home half of the first, stole second, was sacrificed to third, and scored on Cardinalli's ground out to tie the game at one apiece. Olson's triple followed and the senior came home on a wild pitch -- one of eight by San Francisco pitching on the day -- for a lead UC Davis would not relinquish.

The Aggies sent nine batters to the plate as part of a four-run second, the big blow coming off the bat of Cardinalli, who skied a ball over the head of the outfielder in the left centerfield gap with the bases loaded for a three-run triple.

A sacrifice fly by Bily in the third and a wild pitch in the fourth made it 8-1, Olson's RBI single in the sixth tacked on another, and UC Davis batted around in the seventh to score six more en route to its total.

After the first inning, the Dons added single runs in the fifth and ninth on sacrifice flies by Ross Puskarich and Matt Sinatro, respectively, to cap the scoring. Allen Smoot finished 2-for-4 to lead San Francisco.

The Aggies return to Dobbins Stadium and Big West play this weekend, welcoming Hawai'i in for a three-game series on April 8-10. The series opens with a 2:30 p.m. first pitch on Friday, with 1:00 p.m. starts on Saturday and Sunday to follow.
