NAPA, Calif. - Senior Betty Chen was 1 under on the front nine at Silverado Resort and Spa's North Course, finishing with a 1-over 73 for a tie for 16th place, while senior Andrea Wong shot 74 as the UC Davis women's golf team opened the Silverado Showdown on Sunday tied for ninth.

The Aggies shot 13-over 301 in the first round and are tied with No. 43 New Mexico, No. 44 Ohio State and San Francisco. Wong is tied for 25th after 18 holes while freshman Daniela Anastasi carded a 76 and is tied for 46th. Junior Paige Lee shot 78 and is tied for 65th while Alexandra Zeng shot 85.

"Today's round was a good step in the right direction," said head coach Anna Temple. "We definitely saw some improvement in some things we have been working on which is exciting. The course is in great shape and our team has responded well to its demands. We are excited for the early start in the second round and to have the opportunity to put together another round with improvement towards our goals."

Beginning her round on the 10th tee, Chen was 3 over after seven holes but then began to turn the tide with a birdie on the par-4 17th hole. She then enjoyed a solid trip through the course's front nine which saw her birdie the par-4 third hole and the par-5 ninth, while adding six pars and just one bogey.

Wong used two birdies over a three-hole span - both coming on par-5 holes - to make her turn at par. After falling to 4 over with just two holes remaining, Wong birdied the par-4 eighth and par-5 ninth holes to rally back for a 74.

Anastasi had three birdies on Sunday while Lee had two birdies and was just 2 over midway through her round. Zeng had three birdies in her opening round.

Eleventh-ranked Stanford is 2 under and has a four-shot lead over No. 40 Colorado (+2) while No. 50 LSU (+5) and No. 23 Oregon (+5) are tied for third. Nine teams ranked in Golfstat's top 40 are participating in the tournament which runs through Tuesday.

The Aggies will play with San Francisco and New Mexico in Monday's second round, beginning at 7:45 a.m.
