LAHAINA, Hawaii. - Junior Paige Lee birdied her final hole to post a 1-under 71 and win Big West Women's Golf Championship medalist honors on Tuesday - the Aggies' fifth winner in the past eight years - as UC Davis finished third after posting its best round of the tournament at The Bay Course.
Senior Andrea Wong finished fifth and senior Betty Chen tied for ninth after shooting 74 and 73, respectively, on Tuesday. The Aggies, who entered the championship as six-time defending champion, were 57 over for the three-day event. UC Riverside (+50) won the title while Cal Poly (+54) took second.
The Big West also announced its postseason honors on Tuesday with Lee and Wong earning All-Big West first-team recognition, and Betty Chen and Samantha Hutchison being named honorable mention.
UC Davis' final round was sparked by strong play throughout its lineup with all five players posting their best rounds of the week. Daniela Anastasi shot 79 and tied for 30th while Alexandra Zeng had an 80 and was 37th.
Lee was in a battle with Kassidy Teare of Long Beach State all day after entering the final round trailing by two shots. But she forged forged a tie with a spectacular 2-under back nine that was capped by a birdie on the par-5, 530-yard 18th hole. That put Lee, who finished 4 over for the championship, a stroke ahead of Teare, who still had several holes remaining. Teare, ranked 49th by Golfstat, had pars on her final six holes and was unable to make up the stroke.
"After the first two rounds, today was what we needed to do to have a chance," said head coach Anna Temple. "Paige had a great final round and making a birdie under pressure on the final hole was amazing! Andrea and Betty also had very solid rounds for us and that helped tremendously.
"To have three players finish in the top 10 individually is great accomplishment," she added. "Unfortunately, we were unable to dig ourselves out of the hole we created after the first two rounds, but our resiliency today was one of a kind."
Lee, named the Big West Player of the Year last season and subsequently selected as an All-America honorable mention, had two birdies and a bogey on the front nine before picking up pars on the first five holes of the back. She birdied the par-5, 15th for the third straight day before taking the lead for good with her memorable birdie on the 18th. She finished 4-over 220 for her second collegiate win.
Lee joins Alice Kim (2011), Beverly Vatananugulkit (2012), Demi Runas (2013) and Andrea Wong (2015) as winners of the Big West Championship.
Wong, a senior from San Francisco, posted her third career top-five finish at the championship. She was second as a freshman before winning it last year. Wong took fifth after playing her first nine shots two shots over par and then turning it on to go even on the back, including a birdie on the 15th. Her round of 74 put her 11 over overall.
Chen, who was fourth at the Big West Championship last season at El Macero Country Club, shot a 73 with a strong round that included three birdies, including a pair on par-5 holes. She was even over her final nine holes. Anastasi made her turn 7 over but then rallied with three birdies over her final six holes to shoot 79. Zeng was also 7 over midway through her final round but was just 1 over the rest of the way, helped by back-to-back birdies on the 15th and 16th holes.
UC Davis was a collective 1 under on the course's back nine on Tuesday.
Lee and Wong were each named to the All-Big West first team for the third time and Chen earned her fourth All-Big West recognition. Hutchison is a freshman from San Jose and is honored for the first time.
Teare was named the player of the year while Jakeishya Le of UC Riverside and Haley Tygert of Long Beach State shared Big West Freshman of the Year accolades. Cal Poly's Sofie Aargaard was named Big West Coach of the Year.
UC Riverside earned the Big West's automatic berth to the upcoming NCAA Regionals. Selections for the championship will be announced on Monday.
