Aggies edged late as Titans take the series

Box Score

FULLERTON, Calif. -- Jerrod Bravo's squeeze with nobody out in the bottom of the eighth plated Timmy Richards with the go-ahead run as host Cal State Fullerton squeezed past UC Davis for a 3-2 victory and a series win on Saturday night at Goodwin Field.

The loss was the fifth straight for the Aggies, who fell to 8-20 overall and 1-7 in Big West Conference play despite a seventh inning rally to tie the game. The Titans improved to 20-13 overall and 6-2 in league action with the win.

With the score tied at two apiece after UC Davis scored on a passed ball in its half of the seventh to tie the game, Richards led-off the eighth being hit by a pitch and went all the way to third on a single through the right side by Tanner Pinkston. After a pitching change, Bravo laid down a perfectly placed bunt on a 2-1 offering from Blake Peters, enough to get Richards home for a 3-2 lead.

Scott Serigstad (1-0), who came on in relief in the sixth with the Aggies threatening, then shut the door in the ninth to nail down the win, striking out a pair around a ground ball back to the mound to secure the victory. He allowed an unearned run on two hits in 3.1 innings, striking out five to claim his first win of the season.

Junior right-hander Justin Mullins (0-4) took the loss in relief of starter Spencer Henderson, allowing a run on two hits and striking out a pair in 1.2 innings of work. He came on to erase a threat in the sixth with a strikeout and a ground ball, struck out another in a clean seventh, and pitched to two batters in the eighth before being lifted in favor of Peters.

Henderson, making only his second start of the season, allowed a pair of runs on just five hits while striking out three in 5.1 innings.

The Aggies were the first on the board in the fourth thanks to some help with two outs in the inning as Guillermo Salazar reached on an error after a fly ball and groundout to start the frame. Salazar stole second and came around on score on freshman Logan Denholm's single to centerfield for the 1-0 advantage.

Pinkston evened things up quickly in Fullerton's half of the fourth, leading off the inning with his second home run of the season to make it 1-1. An inning later, the Titans regained the lead, manufacturing the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Josh Vargas that scored Scott Hurst to make it 2-1.

An infield single and a hit batter put two on in the sixth for the Aggies, but they came up empty, setting the stage for the tying run in the seventh. David Langer led-off with a single through the left side, was sacrificed to second, moved to third on a wild pitch and, after a walk to Tanner Bily, came home on a passed ball to knot the score at 2-2.

In all, UC Davis left six on base for the game -- four of those in scoring position. The Aggie pitchers combined to strand seven Fullerton runners, five of those in scoring position and three of those five at third base.

Senior Cameron Olson led UC Davis at the plate with a 2-for-4 night for his fifth multi-hit game of the season, while Langer finished 1-for-4 -- the sixth time in his last seven contests that the freshman has finished with a hit. With a walk in the first inning, Mark Cardinalli has now reached base safely in each of his last nine games, tied with teammate Alex Aguiar for the second-longest streak of the year.

The two teams conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon (April 16) at 1 p.m.
