RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. - Seniors Betty Chen and Andrea Wong each posted wins for the UC Davis women's golf team on Tuesday, helping the Aggies advance past Big West rival UC Irvine in the third round of the SDSU March Mayhem match play event at Farms Club.
The Aggies and Anteaters tied with 2.5 points each after each team won two individual matches and tied the remaining one. UC Davis, however, advanced on tiebreakers and will face Memphis for 13th-place on Wednesday. The Aggies were defeated by Texas State, 3.5-1.5, earlier in the day in a consolation-round match that was suspended by darkness on Monday evening.
Chen helped lead the way against UC Irvine, posting a dominating 9&8 win over Joy Kim. Four pars and a birdie helped her win the first six holes and she never looked back from there, capturing three of the next four holes, using a birdie on the par-5 18th as she clinched the match barely past its halfway point.
Consecutive birdies on the 17th and 18th holes helped Wong take a two-hole lead against Breanne Jones, a lead she later stretched to five holes before Jones sliced it to three with three holes remaining. The players halved the seventh hole with pars, clinching the match for Wong, 3&2.
Sam Hutchison fell to Kelsey Kawaguchi, 3&2, in their match while Alexandra Zeng fell 6&4 to Samantha Chan, as UC Irvine evened the individual matches. Paige Lee trailed Camille Wagg by a hole through much of the first half of their match but then won two straight holes, including one with a birdie on the 18th, to take a lead. Wagg later tied it with a birdie and the duo halved the remaining three holes for a tie.
Zeng posted a 1-up win over Maty Monzingo of Texas State during the Aggies' and Bobcats second-round match that finished up in the morning, clinching the victory after a birdie on the final hole, the par-5 ninth. Wong's match with Millie Saroha was stopped once Texas State clinched the team win. She was all square with Saroha at the time, earning each team a half-point.
The tournament, which features 10 teams ranked in Golfstat's top 40, concludes with the final round on Wednesday. The Aggies and Memphis will tee off on the 10th hole beginning at 7:45 a.m.
