DAVIS, Calif. -- After battling through three hours and a pair of rain delays of more than 30 minutes, the UC Davis baseball team's game against Stanford on Monday afternoon was suspended due to darkness with the Cardinal holding a 12-9 advantage after eight full innings at Dobbins Stadium.
The two teams will resume the game with the top of the ninth inning when the Aggies visit Sunken Diamond on May 17. The teams will then follow up with their regularly scheduled game, currently scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
UC Davis rallied back from a five-run deficit through five thanks to a huge sixth inning that saw the Aggies send 10 batters to the plate and score seven runs to take a 7-5 lead. After loading the bases with no outs thanks to a single, a hit batter, and a walk, freshman Ryan Anderson's two-run double down the right-field line opened the scoring for the home team, which tacked on another run when Cameron Olson's ground ball was misplayed, allowing Tanner Bily to cross home plate and make it 5-3.
Following a pitching change, freshman Logan Denholm dropped an RBI single into right field to make it 5-4, and a walk to freshman Garret Kelly with the bases loaded following a picture-perfect bunt by Mason Novak tied the game at 5-all. Guillermo Salazar threatened to break the game wide open, but was thwarted by a diving catch in left that turned extra bases into a sacrifice fly that gave the Aggies a 6-5 lead.
Kelly then beat out the turn on a potential inning-ending double play ball at second base, allowing another run to score and handing UC Davis a 7-5 advantage.
After both teams went quietly in the seventh, Stanford returned the favor with seven runs of its own in the eighth to regain the lead. The Cardinal sent 12 batters to the plate in their big inning, tying the game on an RBI single by Bryce Carter and a wild pitch before getting a go-ahead two-run single by Nico Hoerner and adding a cushion thanks to a two-run single by Mikey Diekroeger and another single to right by Matt Winaker to rebuild their five-run advantage.
UC Davis wasn't done however, chasing the sun with two more runs in its half of the eighth. Denholm singled to lead-off the inning and moved all the way to third when Mason Novak's infield single was thrown away. Both eventually came around to score on a passed ball and wild pitch, respectively, to close the gap to 12-9. The Aggies then put runners on the corners with two outs before a fly ball shut down any further threat and the two teams agreed to suspend play as darkness descended.
Anderson, Denholm, and Novak, all finished with multiple hits to lead UC Davis, which managed only one hit and three base runners before exploding in the sixth, while Duke Kinamon finished 4-for-5 for Stanford before leaving for a pinch-runner in the eighth.
Blake Peters for the Aggies and Colton Hock for the Cardinal are on the mound for their respective teams when play resumes, each entering the game in the eighth inning for their respective teams.
UC Davis returns to the diamond for a three-game series this week with the Air Force Academy beginning on Thursday (March 24) at 2:30 p.m. at Dobbins Stadium.
