DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis hit a season-high 11 baskets from three, Darius Graham led all players with 19 points and four Aggies finished in double figures for the first time since the team visited Seattle University last December, but a 5-1, UC Santa Barbara run prior to the under-four media timeout in the second half, and a 6-0 run in the final minutes turned a two-point Aggie deficit into a 72-66 Gaucho victory in Thursday night's Big West Conference game at the Pavilion.
UC Davis will enter Saturday's home game vs. Long Beach State, with a 10-13 overall and 5-5 Big West record; UCSB improves to 11-12 and 5-5 with the result.
With the loss, the Aggies' home win streak, against conference opponents, ends at 12 games - a string of results that spans nearly two full years.
UC Davis' last league home loss took place on March 1, 2014, against UCSB.
Due to a unique scheduling quirk, these two teams will face one another for the second time, in as many weeks, when the Aggies head to Santa Barbara, on Feb. 20, seeking a season split.
Two of Graham's five field goals were from three; combined with his perfect 6-for-6 shooting at the line, the junior guard fell two points shy of matching his career high.
Siler Schneider added another 13 points while Brynton Lemar and Lawrence White each finished with 11.
Trailing by five at halftime, the Aggies pulled within two on four occasions throughout the second half before the Gauchos pulled away late with their final scoring run of the night.
UC Davis shot .431 overall (on 51 attempts), UCSB finished with a .415 shooting (on 53 attempts and each team finished with 22 field goals. However, the Gauchos' scored 26 of their points in the paint and hit 23 of 26 shots at the line (.885) to neutralize the Aggies' three-point prowess.
UC Davis shot 11-for-22 from three (.500) compared to a UCSB team that only hit 5 of 18 shots from distance.
"I thought we were a step slow tonight, credit (UCSB) for making the hustle plays on our floor tonight," said UC Davis head coach Jim Les.
"I am going to vow … that we are not going to be out-worked, or out-hustled come Saturday (vs. Long Beach State)."
Led by Michael Bryson with his 16 points and 10 rebounds, five Gauchos scored 10 or more points against an Aggie defense that allowed a league-low 61.8 points per game, against Big West teams, entering Thursday night's game.
In addition to Gabe Vincent, who ended his night with 13, Sam Beeler, Eric Childress and John Green each scored 12.
Saturday's game, against the 49ers, is the back half of a UC Davis basketball doubleheader; tipoff will take place at 5:30 p.m. or 35 minutes after the women's game ends, whichever is later.
