Dec. 29, 2016 Latest NCAA RPI Rankings
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A big win to open its trip to the state of Florida has propelled the UC Davis women's basketball team into the top 50 of the NCAA's latest RPI rankings, as the Aggies jumped 25 spots to No. 46 in the country following their six-point victory over UCF on Wednesday night.
Believed to be the program's highest ranking at this point in the season during the Division I Era, UC Davis entered its contest against the Knights ranked No. 71 in the country before putting up 77 points against the nation's No. 6-rated scoring defense. UCF was ranked No. 78 in the RPI entering the contest before the Aggies' 77-71 win to improve to 9-3 overall on the season and earn their third-straight road victory.
Dating back to the 2010-11 season when records are available from the NCAA, UC Davis posted a program-best finish of No. 79 in the final non-conference RPI, as the Aggies ended the first half of the season with an 11-2 mark en route to a Division I Era record 24 wins and an NCAA Tournament berth.
UC Davis, which is the top-rated Big West Conference team in the latest RPI (Long Beach State is second at No. 85), has already faced four teams ranked among the top 100 this season, posting wins over No. 98 Saint Mary's (5-6 overall heading into its conference opener against Loyola Marymount) and No. 100 Montana State (7-3 overall), while two of the Aggies' three losses have come against two teams ranked among the RPI's top 30 in No. 9 Oregon State and No. 26 Stanford.
Another boost could await UC Davis on Friday (Dec. 30) when the Aggies take on Jacksonville, which enters the game ranked No. 104 in the RPI. The Aggies stand ahead of such nationally ranked squads as No. 12 West Virginia (RPI No. 67), No. 14 Ohio State (No. 83), No. 16 Texas (No. 78), No. 20 Colorado (No. 79), and No. 25 Syracuse (No. 101), as well as USC (No. 76), Gonzaga (No. 71), Ole Miss (No. 112), Vanderbilt (No. 68), and Clemson (No. 81), which are all receiving votes in this week's Associated Press poll.
Tip off against the Dolphins is scheduled for 10 a.m. (PT) at the UNF Arena in Jacksonville, Fla., as the game is part of the Best Western UNF New Year Classic. The game can be heard live locally on KDVS 90.3 FM in Davis.
