STOCKTON, Calif. - Don't let the final score fool you. Even though No. 17 Albany advanced to the America East Tournament semifinals by virtue of its 3-0 win over UC Davis in Thursday's quarterfinal at Pacific Field Hockey Turf, the Aggies frustrated the Great Danes throughout the entire day thanks to a stellar effort from their back line and Beth Lee.

Facing one of the most potent offenses in the nation, UC Davis' defenders made one great tackle after another throughout the entire match. When Albany was able to break through and create a scoring lane, it was Lee who made one acrobatic save after another to keep her team in contention until the waning minutes of the match.

Lee finished with 10 saves to record her third double-digit total of the season.

Led by Eden Borsack with two, five different Aggies tested Albany goalkeeper Maxi Primus. Lauren Copeland, Agustina Singh, Kayla Wigney and Lauren Gengarella each recorded one shot. All six of the Aggies' attempts were on goal, most were turned away at the last possible moment by Primus.

UC Davis entered the break down 1-0 after allowing Albany to score its first goal 11 minutes into the match. On a Great Dane counterattack, a diving Lee turned away Rachel Billing from point blank range on the first of her two shots. However, the ball took an unfortunate deflection and ricocheted back to Billing, who lifted her second shot over a now-sprawled Aggie goalkeeper.

Even though Albany doubled its lead in the 45th minute off a penalty corner, UC Davis remained poised and played with confidence. Both Aggie corners were earned throughout the second half and the team nearly chopped its lead back to a one-goal margin on numerous occasions.

When UC Davis was forced to play one player short due to a green card, which was issued five minutes into the second half, it was Albany that could not organize itself on offense due to the energetic effort by a swarming Aggie defense.

Rarely did the ball enter the Aggies' half of the turf throughout that two-minute timespan.

Until its 65th-minute goal, which was also off a corner, Albany was visibly frustrated throughout most of the match since it was only able to score once during the run of play, and was forced to respond to timely UC Davis counterattacks and multiple scoring chances.

With the result, UC Davis will end its season with a 5-13 overall record. Thursday's match also marked the final appearance in a UC Davis uniform for Borsack, Copeland, Courtney Hessler, Kat Jackson, Lee, Singh and Wigney.

No. 17 Albany improves to 13-5 will now face the winner of Friday's Pacific-New Hampshire matchup.
