Moneke's double-double leads Aggies at final Shootout game

Box Score Nov. 26, 2016

Box Score

ANCHORAGE - Chima Moneke led all players in Saturday's game at the Alaska Airlines Center and recorded his second double-double of the season by posting a career-high 21 points and 12 rebounds, Mikey Henn nearly matched a career high of his own by adding 11 points and Siler Schneider rounded out a trio of Aggie double-digit scorers by chipping in another 10, but a late 6-0 Oakland run, and its ability to knock in eight of its final 10 free throw attempts helped it earn a 79-66 victory in the GCI Great Alaska Shootout's consolation championship.

Following the game, Shootout officials announced Moneke as part of its all-tournament team.

UC Davis will end its first visit to the 39th-annual event with a 5-3 record, and will enjoy a well-deserved break after playing four games within a six-day timespan. The Aggies will return to action next Saturday (Dec. 3) in a 7 p.m. road game at Idaho, the last of four Big Sky opponents on their non-conference schedule.

Oakland will continue its season with a 6-1 record.

"That is a good basketball team that is going to win 20 to 25 games, win their league and earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament. I told my team that we went toe-to-toe with them; we have some things that we need to clean up, but I like where this team is as long as we stay healthy and continue to work," said UC Davis head coach Jim Les.

Until the homestretch, neither team held a cushion greater than five points in a matchup that saw these teams swap leads 14 times, and tie the score on another nine occasions.

Up by five late in the game, Oakland's Martez Walker hit a three, followed by a three-point play by Stevie Clark, which turned a two-possession game into an 11-point deficit for the Aggies.

Three-pointers from Graham and Lemar brought their team within seven, with a minute still left to play, but Oakland's free throw shooting enabled it to maintain the lead until the final buzzer.

The Golden Grizzlies earned 10 more trips to the stripe compared to the Aggies (26-16), ultimately earning 19 of their points on free throws.

As was the case in Friday's semifinal vs. Drake, UC Davis outrebounded its opponent, finishing with a 37-36 advantage. In addition to Moneke's 12, J.T. Adenrele set a new season high by grabbing seven boards.

Led by Clark with 19, four Oakland players scored double figures. Of the Golden Grizzlies' 25 field goals, 10 were made from three, including a banked-shot basket at the buzzer that broke a 34-34 tie entering halftime.

"I told the team that I was pleased overall with their effort, and I'm encouraged, not discouraged, by this tournament and where they are thus far." Added Les, "This team has a huge ceiling, I love everyone's competitive nature."
