Box Score Oct. 9, 2016 IOWA CITY, Iowa - Playing its second match in as many days at Grant Field, home of Iowa field hockey, UC Davis capped its weekend by facing the No. 16 Hawkeyes in Sunday's non-conference match in Iowa City. Iowa scored its first goal of the afternoon in the seventh minute, then tacked on another one with less than two minutes remaining before halftime to hold a 2-0 lead at the break.
UC Davis remained within striking distance once action resumed, but two more Hawkeye goals, scored midway through the second half, and another one scored off a penalty corner with no time left in regulation, helped the host team pull away and collect a 5-0 victory.
The Aggies will return to league action this upcoming week when the Pacific Tigers visit Aggie Field Hockey Facility Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. Field hockey will enter that contest with a 4-9 overall record while Iowa improves to 9-5 with Sunday's result.
UC Davis nearly scored the first goal of the match when the Aggies drew a penalty corner just over six minutes after action began. After Lauren Mewes inserted the ball into play, Kayla Wigney smacked a shot towards Iowa's cage, an attempt that just sailed over the crossbar.
Down by two goals, the Aggies nearly cut that lead in half when Danielle Puplava created some space and recorded her first shot of the afternoon. A quick-reflex save from Alexandra Pecora was needed to keep the Aggies off the scoreboard.
Once field hockey returns to Davis, the team will enter the homestretch with four matches remaining before the start of the America East Field Hockey Tournament. After hosting Pacific on Friday, UC Davis will compete in back-to-back road matches at Stanford (10/21) and Pacific (10/23) before ending the regular season on its home turf against Cal (10/28).
