SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Senior Stephanie Stamates and junior Katy Nogaki finished 1-2 in the individual balance beam standings, helping UC Davis recover from a rocky start en route to a 193.100 road score in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's gymnastics dual meet at Sacramento State Friday night. The host Hornets won the meet with a 194.250.
Stamates matched her career high of 9.875 while Nogaki tied personal-best 9.850 for a third straight week. Stamates also hit a season-high 9.875 on floor exercise to take part in a three-way tie for first in that event. Senior
Dani Judal became the first Aggie to compete in the all-around in 2016, compiling a total of 39.000. Friday's meet is her fourth score of 39 or better in her career.
Both teams struggled in their respective uneven bars rotations. UC Davis counted two misses in the meet's opening quarter to start with a 46.450, its first sub-47 score in the event in more than four years. Sophomore Miranda Holder led the Aggies with 9.725 on the event while Judal added a 9.700. Sacramento State also counted a pair of falls on the same apparatus, but those miscues were offset by having the top three individuals, including meet-winner Kalliah McCartney's 9.850.
However, UC Davis answered strong on the vault in the second rotation, posting a 48.875 to match its host's score in the opener. Nogaki and freshman Kara Jones each hit 9.825 to tie for second in the meet. Judal chipped in a 9.775, Holder went 9.750 and freshman Yasmine Yektaparast rounded out the scorers with a 9.700. The 48.875 total narrowly missed the program's all-time top 10, but established a season high by more than a half-point.
The Aggies continued to roll on floor with a 48.975, getting 9.875 scores by Yektaparast and Stamates. They matched Hornet Lauren Rice for the meet title in that event. Holder completed her strong three-event program with a 9.725, just behind teammates Judal and sophomore Amanda Presswood at 9.750. That floor total also marks a 2016 best, beating the previous week's 48.925 at BYU.
Finally, UC Davis assembled a 48.800 on balance beam thanks to Stamates and Nogaki at the top of the event standings. Judal contributed a 9.775 while Jones and sophomore Rachel Kreager each turned in 9.650 scores.
McCartney and Rice took the top two spots in the all-around at 39.300 and 39.125, respectively.
The Aggies return to action on Friday, February 5 in a home dual against MPSF rival San Jose State.
