Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - Junior goalkeeper Erica Cohen became the second player in field hockey's Division I history to record 11 saves when UC Davis hosted No. 12 Louisville in Sunday's non-conference match at Aggie Field Hockey Facility. However, after scoring in the ninth minute, the Cardinals tacked on another in the 53rd to defeat the Aggies, 2-0.

Louisville, the second nationally ranked team UC Davis has faced this season, remains undefeated this year at 4-0. After opening the season with a neutral-site matchup vs. No. 4 Syracuse, the Aggies end their season-long four-match homestand with a 2-3 overall mark.

Even though UL took an early 1-0 lead eight minutes and 43 seconds into the match, Cohen made sure that the Aggies remained within striking distance as the day progressed. By picking up eight of her 11 saves in the first half - combined with her teammate's effort on defense - UC Davis entered halftime trailing by one.

Agustina Singh nearly tied the score for the Aggies in the 24th minute, when she was able to beat UL goalkeeper Ayeisha McFerran with her cross-cage shot. Unable to stop Singh's shot, even with a diving effort, McFerran was saved by her teammate, Gianna Perrone who stood along the goal line near the right post. By backing up her 'keeper on the play, Perrone prevented UC Davis from tying the match at 1-1.

Cohen added another three saves to her total throughout the second half, joining former UC Davis goalkeeper Lauren Sawvelle as the only players to record a double-digit saves total in a single game - something the former Aggie accomplished on 10 occasions throughout her three-year career.

"It was an exciting game filled with a lot of energy. The team had my back the entire time, which allows me to play with confidence," said Cohen.

Jamie Garcia took a team-high two of the Aggies' five shots and was one of four players who recorded a shot on goal. In addition to Garcia and Singh, whose surefire goal was turned away by Perrone, Lauren Copeland and Danielle Koehne also tested McFerran throughout the day.

After scoring on a penalty corner in the 53rd minute, Louisville packed the scoring arc for the remainder of the match, counterattacked when an opportunity presented itself and preserved its two-goal lead until the final horn sounded.

Field hockey will now embark on an 11-day, six match road trip that includes stops in five different states. UC Davis' next home match will take place on Sept. 25 versus Pacific. That matchup is the first league event of the year for both teams and first-ever as America East members.

"This is a great opportunity for this team to come together as a team, both on and off the field," Cohen said. "Hopefully, this will lead to more victories because everyone is excited to play the teams that are scheduled throughout this trip."

UC Davis is slated to face Holy Cross (9/10), Fairfield (9/11), Hofstra (9/15), No. 10 Northwestern (9/15), Central Michigan (9/18) and No. 19 Michigan State (9/20) throughout the upcoming weeks.
