Sept. 22, 2015 MADISON, Wisc. - Junior Paige Lee won her match wire-to-wire while freshman Sam Hutchison scored an eagle on her final hole, leading UC Davis to a 5-0 shutout of host Wisconsin in the final round of the East-West Match Classic at University Ridge Golf Course Tuesday morning.
All five Aggies, each of whom opened on the 10th hole, won their matchups against the host Badgers. Lee defeated Becky Klongland, 3 and 2; Hutchison outdueled Tess Hackworthy by one hole; senior Betty Chen beat Brooke Ferrell, 2 and 1; senior Andrea Wong claimed a 4 and 3 win against Gabby Curtis; and freshman Daniela Anastasi finished strong to clip Michelle Cheung.
Lee birdied the 10th and 12th holes to take an early 2-hole lead. She held at least a one-hole lead through the back nine, won the third to go 3-up, then went dormie after her birdie on the fifth. Lee lost the sixth but halved the seventh to clinch the victory.
Wong halved the 10th with Curtis, birdied the 11th to take the initial lead, then amassed a 3-hole edge by the 17th. She gave up ground on the fourth to slip to 2-up before capturing the fifth and sixth to seal the win. Chen also never trailed to her Wisconsin counterpart although the two players were all square as late as the first hole. She proceeded to par every hole from the second through eighth, picking up two en route to the win.
The two UC Davis freshmen both came from behind to take their wins. Hutchison took an early advantage when she birdied the 11th, stumbled on the 14th to square with Hackworthy, then crafted as much as a 2-hole edge after the first. Hackworthy rallied to take the sixth and seventh to take her first lead of the match before Hutchison responded with a birdie on the eighth and the eagle on the ninth.
Anastasi fell behind on the 10th hole to start the round, won the 12th and 15th to take a 1-hole lead, then fell to all square after Cheung birdied the first. The La Jolla native then shot 3-under par through the next four holes to build herself a 3-hole cushion after the fifth. Anastasi halved both the seventh and eighth for the victory.
The East-West tournament is designed to match the NCAA Finals format of stroke play followed by match play.
UC Davis returns to action on October 5 and 6 for the Windy City Collegiate, hosted by Northwestern.
