Kayla Wigney caps Aggies' comeback in OT

Box Score Sept. 18, 2015

Box Score

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Central Michigan scored the first goal in Friday's non-conference match from Mount Pleasant, Michigan, but it was Jamie Garcia who scored in the 59th minute to even the score and force overtime. Facing a golden goal situation, the Aggies were the only ones who left CMU Field Hockey Complex happy after Kayla Wigney scored the game-winning goal six minutes and 33 seconds in the first overtime period to cap UC Davis' comeback and help the team collect a 2-1 win.

UC Davis will now head to Michigan State, site of Sunday's 9 a.m. (PT) match, and the last of six straight road contests, with a 4-6 record. Central Michigan drops to 0-7.

Less than two minutes after the second half started, the Chippewas scored the first goal of the match to take a 1-0 lead.

That shot, one of six earned by CMU, was the only one that found the back of the cage all day.

In the 59th minute, off one of five Aggie penalty corners, Garcia scored her team-high fifth goal of the season after smacking a line drove that easily beat Central Michigan's goalkeeper. Earning assists on the play were Danielle Koehne, who inserted the ball into play, and Hannah Drawbridge, UC Davis' stopper.

Koehne now has a team-high four assists to her credit this year - her third in the last four contests and a total that is twice as many as she collected throughout her career entering the 2015 season. Drawbridge will head to East Lansing with three assists - all earned throughout field hockey's season-long road trip.

For the second time this year, overtime was needed to determine a winner in a match that involved UC Davis. As was the case during their home opener against Bryant, it was the Aggies who stepped up during a golden goal situation.

Wigney recorded the only shot taken by either team in OT, but that was all her team needed because she took Lauren Copeland's pass and turned it into the decisive swing of the afternoon, completing field hockey's come-from-behind effort in the process.

Only one match remains until UC Davis returns home; that non-conference contest, the final tune-up of the season before the start of America East play, will take place at Michigan State this Sunday. Live stats for this 9 a.m. matchup are available at ucdavisaggies.com.
