EVANSTON, Ill. - A hard-fought, and scoreless first half at Lakeside Field spilled over into the second when UC Davis faced No. 12 Northwestern Tuesday afternoon. Even though junior forward Kayla Wigney and redshirt freshman forward Kelley Kramer scored 13 seconds apart in the 62nd minute, four Wildcat goals posted within a 15-minute timespan helped NU defeat the Aggies, 6-2.
UC Davis will now head to Central Michigan this Friday with a 3-6 record. By ending its three-match homestand with a positive result, Northwestern improves to 6-2.
Following NU's scoring outburst, the Aggies began to chip away at their deficit when Wigney scored her second goal of the season on a reverse chip shot in front of the Wildcats' cage.
Once play resumed, UC Davis' aggressiveness was rewarded once again when Kramer scored her first collegiate goal by punching her attempt past NU goalkeeper Lindsay von der Luft.
In less than a minute, UC Davis sliced its four-goal deficit in half. Now armed with momentum, the Aggies continued to test von der Luft in an attempt to further trim their opponent's lead.
Knowing that UC Davis was forced to take strategic chances on offense to pull closer to its opponent on the scoreboard, NU scored two goals in the 67th and 70th minutes to pull away and defeat the Aggies.
Hannah Drawbridge, Courtney Hessler, Kramer, Wigney and Linnea Whitney each recorded one shot for the Aggies. Of the team's total, four of these attempts were on goal.
In addition to UC Davis goalkeeper Erica Cohen's four saves, Briana Sooy also picked up a defensive save when she turned away a would-be goal from Caroline Troncelliti in the 16th minute to preserve a 0-0 score.
The defensive save was Sooy's first as an Aggie and the team's fifth this season. Last year, the Aggies recorded nine defensive saves through 20 matches.
At its current pace, UC Davis will set a new school record for the most defensive saves in a single season, which was originally set in 2010 when that squad recorded 11.
UC Davis' six-match road trip will continue this Friday at Central Michigan; a live stats link for this 12 p.m. non-conference matchup is available at ucdavisaggies.com.
