Hofstra survives Aggies' relentless attack

Box Score Sept. 13, 2015

Box Score

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - UC Davis outshot Hofstra 23-13, recorded 12 shots on goal compared to their opponent's nine, and was responsible for 11 of the 13 penalty corners drawn in Sunday's non-conference match at Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium - one that the host Pride won by a 4-2 score.

Now halfway through its season-long six-match road trip, UC Davis will enter Tuesday's match at No. 9 Northwestern with a 3-5 overall record. Hofstra's record now stands at 4-3.

Hofstra opened Sunday's action by scoring the first of its three unanswered goals 90 seconds into the match; that early lead grew by two after the Pride tacked on additional goals at the 11th and 16th minutes.

After the Aggies withstood that early scoring barrage, the team regained its composure and began to chip away at their deficit as the half progressed.

From the moment the Pride scored its final goal of the opening half, until the break, UC Davis took six of the following nine shots posted by either team, and 13 of the 20 combined swings taken throughout the second half.

Down 3-0 at halftime, Jamie Garcia scored her team's first goal on one of its seven second-half penalty corners.

Once Briana Sooy stopped Danielle Koehne's insertion, Garcia blasted one of her team-high eight shots past the Pride's goalkeeper to score her second goal in as many matches.

That play also marked the third straight occasion that Koehne earned an assist on an Aggie goal; the junior forward set up Courtney Hazy's scoring opportunity and earned the game-winning assist two days ago when her team topped Fairfield by a 3-2 margin.

As is the case with Garcia and her scoring total, Koehne is now responsible for a team-high three of the Aggies' 10 assists.

The score remained 3-1 until the Pride struck again with 11 minutes remaining in the match to extend its cushion back to three.

Responsible for every shot and penalty corner earned by either team from that point, until the end of the match, UC Davis was able to trim another goal off of its deficit when Kate Young found the back of the cage for the first time this season.

On play that originated from another Koehne corner, Young quickly scooped up a loose ball in front of the Pride's cage and earned her only shot on goal moments thereafter - a strike that helped her also record the second goal of her career.

UC Davis' travels throughout the Midwest will commence Tuesday afternoon when the Aggies face their third nationally ranked opponent of the season at noon. A live stats link for this non-conference contest is available at ucdavisaggies.com.
