Aggies clipped by Holy Cross in rain-soaked match

Box Score Sept. 10, 2015

Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - Briana Sooy scored her first goal as an Aggie in the 21st minute to even Thursday's non-conference match at one apiece, but host Holy Cross scored the decisive goal five minutes later to down UC Davis, 2-1, in an athletic event that was marred by a torrential downpour from start to finish.

UC Davis will continue its season-long six-match road trip Friday afternoon, at Fairfield, with a 2-4 record. Holy Cross is now 3-2 this season.

Other than the final score, the Aggies dominated every other facet of Thursday's matchup.

Led by Jamie Garcia with seven, Agustina Singh with six and Courtney Hessler with five, UC Davis recorded 14 shots compared to the Crusaders' six. Including its five first-half opportunities, field hockey also earned nine penalty corners throughout the match compared to Holy Cross' seven.

Holy Cross scored its first goal five minutes and 32 second after the opening whistle to take an early lead.

With plenty of field hockey still remaining, even in inclement conditions, Sooy pulled the Aggies even after tipping Kate Young's pass past Crusader goalkeeper Megan Inch to record her first goal as an Aggie.

By finding her teammate with her pinpoint pass, on a play that originated from a penalty corner, Young also recorded her first collegiate assist.

Unfortunately for field hockey, Holy Cross responded by scoring, what eventually became the game-winning goal, five minutes after UC Davis tied the match when Crusader midfielder Emily Loprete redirected a pass from teammate Maureen Connolly to post her team-high third strike of the season.

Every goal scored in Thursday's matchup took place within the first 26 minutes of the match. Even though the Aggies out-shot the Crusaders 12-4, drew four corners vs. their opponent's one, created multiple scoring opportunities and dominated possession throughout the second half, neither team found the back of the cage for the rest of the day.

UC Davis will compete in its second match in as many days when the Aggies face the Fairfield Stags on Friday. Links for live stats and a video stream (paid subscription) are available at ucdavisaggies.com. Action at University Field will begin at 1 p.m. (PT).
