June 1, 2015 DAVIS, Calif. - With league championships in women's cross country, men's basketball and women's golf, UC Davis matched its highest-ever finish in the Big West Conference Commissioner's Cup race, placing second with an average of 111.9 points. Additionally, the Aggies captured their third consecutive Causeway Cup in the area rivalry with Sacramento State, closing the year with 57.08 of the 90 total points.
The 111.9 average trails only the 115.6 score in 2011-12, the program's previous second-place showing in its eight-year membership in the conference. Long Beach State won its fifth straight Commissioner's Cup with a 117.1 average. UC Davis had the highest actual point total (1,790) as the only member institution to compete for all 16 Big West championships.
Scoring toward the Commissioner's Cup varies by sport. In baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, women's tennis and women's volleyball, points are awarded according to regular-season finish, with a 20-point bonus going to the champion. In cross country, golf, men's tennis, track & field, and women's water polo, the points awarded are based on the finish at the Big West championship event.
UC Davis women's cross country and men's basketball each posted 200 points for winning their respective nine-sport titles, while women's golf picked up 180 for winning an eight-team championship. Men's golf (160), men's tennis (120) and women's track & field (160) each claimed second-place scoring. The Aggies had also secured triple-digit points from men's soccer (110) and women's volleyball (130) during the fall race.
In the Causeway Cup race, UC Davis stormed to a 38.75-3.75 lead during the first eight events of the school year, then mathematically clinched the competition after the men's tennis squad downed the Hornets by a 6-1 margin back on February 14. The Aggies won the rivalry in women's soccer, volleyball, men's golf, men's and women's cross country, women's basketball, men's tennis and women's track & field. Men's soccer, women's gymnastics and softball won parts of their five-point totals.
UC Davis and Sacramento State compete for five points in each of their common sports except for football, women's volleyball, and men's and women's basketball, which are each worth 10. (Note: no points were contested in men's basketball or women's golf in 2014-15, as those two programs did not meet this year.)
UC Davis has won seven of the 11 total Causeway Cup races: 2004-05, 2007-08, 2009-10, 2010-11, plus the most recent three.
