NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Led by 1-over 73s from Paige Lee and Betty Chen, the No. 20 UC Davis women's golf team ended Friday's second round in fifth place and in position to advance from the NCAA South Bend Regional with one round to go at Warren Golf Course.
The Aggies used consistency throughout its lineup to post a 6-over 294 in Friday's round that wasn't completed until the early evening because of a three-hour lightning delay. UC Davis was already off the course by the time the stoppage occurred.
All five Aggie scores on Friday were within two strokes of each other. Andrea Wong and Blair Lewis each fired 74s while Beverly Vatananugulkit shot 75. Lee, who was tied for fifth after Thursday's first round, is tied for eighth at par while Lewis is tied for 10th at 1 over. Wong is 4 over and tied for 23rd, Vatananugulkit is tied for 58th at 10 over and Chen is 13 over and tied for 77th.
The top six teams after Saturday's final round will move on to the NCAA Finals in Bradenton, Fla., starting on May 22. The fifth-place Aggies are four shots in front of sixth-place Tulane (+17) while Harvard (+18), Oklahoma State (+18) and host Notre Dame (+19) are lurking just below the cutline. Wake Forest (+9) and Arizona (+10) are within striking distance just above the Aggies.
UC Davis kept itself in the top six with solid play throughout its lineup. Chen was particularly impressive after cutting 11 strokes off her opening-round 84. She was even after nine holes and just 1 over on the back. She carded three birdies overall. Lee remained among the leaders with a round that saw her birdie her final two holes to get back to just one shot over par. She was 1 under on her fine nine holes.
Lewis stayed in the top 10 with another good round. She started strong with birdies on her first two holes and was even midway. She was 2 over on the back nine. Wong was 3 over as she made her turn but then charged to a 1-under total the rest of the way to come in with a 74 as well. Vatananugulkit opened with 10 consecutive pars and later closed with a birdie on the 17th hole to help her shoot 75.
Celine Boutier of Duke kept the individual lead at 5 under.
The Aggies will play the final round with Tulane and Arizona starting at 5:54 a.m. (PDT). UC Davis, which is in its sixth straight NCAA regional, is looking to advance to the NCAA Finals for the fourth time.
