SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Paddy O'Brien's pinch-hit RBI single with one out in the 13th scored Kyle Plantier with the game-winning run, ending a three-hour, 35-minute, 13-inning, marathon and lifting host UC Santa Barbara to a 4-3 victory over UC Davis on Sunday afternoon in their Big West Conference series finale at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
The Aggies suffered their second series sweep of the season, falling to 26-19-1 overall and 5-10 in league play. The No. 6 Gauchos improved to 34-10-1 overall and 10-5 in conference action.
Plantier, who was 2-for-2 after pinch-hitting for Austin Bush, led off the decisive 13th with a single, was sacrificed to second, moved to third on a ground out, and scored when O'Brien laced Zach Stone's (3-2) one-strike pitch into centerfield to end the game.
After the Gauchos struck for three runs in the second off starter Max Cordy, UC Davis began to chip away. Spencer Henderson led-off the fifth with a single and scored when Mason Novak, a late-addition to the Aggies' starting lineup, doubled into centerfield to make it 3-1. A wild pitch moved Novak to third and he would score three batters later when teammate Tanner Bily reached on an infield single to make it a one-run contest.
Bily also had his hand in the tying run in the eighth as the junior led-off the inning with a double to right and scored when he sild around the tag at the plate on Austin March's ground ball with the infield in, reaching back with a second-effort to make it 3-all.
However, that would be all the Aggies would be able to muster against the Gauchos, as starter Shane Bieber and reliever Kyle Nelson (3-1) combined to retire the final 17 UC Davis hitters they faced, setting the stage for UCSB's late-game rally.
On the flip side, Spencer Henderson was stellar in relief to keep his side in the contest, allowing just two hits and striking out eight over six shutout innings of work, allowing just three baserunners during his stint on the mound.
Bily and Henderson each finished with a pair of hits, while four different Gaucho hitters contributed two hits for UC Santa Barbara.
The Aggies close out a seven-game road swing with a contest against Causeway rival Sacramento State on Tuesday (May 5) at 6:35 p.m. at Raley Field in West Sacramento. UC Davis then hosts conference rival CSUN in a three-game series at Dobbins Stadium beginning on Friday (May 8) at 2:30 p.m.
