Aggies showcase classroom talents with strong APR

May 27, 2015 DAVIS, Calif. - Behind perfect 1,000 multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores from women's volleyball and women's water polo, and the football team leading the Big Sky Conference in APR for the third consecutive year, the UC Davis Athletics program continues to shine in the classroom in information released by the NCAA on Wednesday.

In all, five UC Davis teams owned or shared the highest APR scores in their respective conferences and eight more ranked in the top three.

The NCAA APR measurement is comprised of student-athlete retention and eligibility that provides a real-time snapshot of academic performance. Each scholarship student-athlete is eligible for one point in each area with an overall team score derived from those totals. A score of 930 is the benchmark for teams to avoid penalties from the NCAA. Aggie teams posted an average APR of 985.

"UC Davis student-athletes are extraordinary young people, not only in their commitment to their athletics performance but in their commitment to their work in the classroom," said Teresa Gould, interim director of athletics. "Our strong APR scores along with our outstanding graduation success rates demonstrate that our student-athletes don't have to compromise their academic performance to compete and succeed in their sport. I am very proud of these accomplishments and applaud our student-athletes for their tremendous work."

Women's water polo posted the highest APR score in the Big West while women's volleyball shared the top score in the conference. Both were among the top 10 percent of their respective sports nationally and earned them NCAA Public Recognition Awards last week.

Women's track and field (996) and baseball (986) also led the Big West with their impressive APR scores. It marks the second straight season that UC Davis has had four teams lead the league.

Football has been a member of the Big Sky for three seasons and has led the league all three years, raising their APR each of the last two years. The Aggies, who led the Big Sky with a score of 970 in 2013, were at 972 last year and jumped to 974 this year.

Softball (994) and women's basketball (990) ranked second-best in the Big West while men's water polo (980) did so in the Western Water Polo Association. Field hockey (993),  gymnastics (987), men's cross country (983) and men's basketball (973) were each third in their respective conferences.
