DAVIS, Calif. -- Senior right-hander Spencer Koopmans struck out six over six-plus innings to tally his sixth win of the season, and four Aggies finished with two hits on the day, as UC Davis clinched its first winning season since 2008 with a 6-3 victory over Cal Poly on Friday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.

UC Davis improved to 29-26-1 overall and 8-15 in Big West Conference play, logging its highest conference win total since the 2012 squad finished 12-12. Cal Poly fell to 27-26 overall and 14-9 in league play with the loss.

In his final start in an Aggie uniform, Koopmans (6-4) pitched into the seventh, allowing three runs on eight hits and walking one while tying his season-high strikeout total. Spencer Henderson entered in relief with one out and put out a Cal Poly rally to preserve a one-run lead, and allowed only one hit in the eighth before giving way to sophomore Zach Stone, who pitched a perfect ninth for his 12th save of the season.

Kyle Smith (5-7) suffered the loss for the Mustangs, allowing three earned on eight hits over four innings.

Tino Lipson, one of the four UC Davis hitters with multiple hits on the day, got the Aggies on the board with an RBI single in the third , and the home team tacked on three more runs in the fourth thanks to an error on a single by Izaak Silva, a squeeze that turned into a single by John Williams, and a two-out error on a ball hit by Tanner Bily to make it 4-0.

The Mustangs got a pair back in the fifth on a two-out, two-run double down the left field line by Brian Mundell -- Cal Poly's first extra-base hit of the series -- to cut the lead in half, and made it a one-run game in the seventh when John Schuknecht homered to left field, his sixth of the season, to lead-off the inning.

Williams, who finished 2-for-3, then gave the Aggies some breathing room in the eighth. Nick Lynch led off being hit by a pitch and was sacrificed to second before being replaced by pinch-runner Alex Aguiar, who went to third on a passed ball as the Mustangs tried to intentionally walk Kevin Barker. Barker took the walk and stole second to put a pair into scoring position for Williams, who lasered a single past Justin Calomeni on the mound to score both and make it 6-3.

Heptig and Silva joined Williams and Lipson with a pair of hits to help lead the Aggies, while Mark Mathias and Schuknecht combined for six of the Mustangs' nine hits, finishing with three apiece.

The rubber game of the series begins on Saturday (May 23) at 1 p.m., with senior right-hander Raul Jacobson scheduled to take the mound for UC Davis. The Aggies' 10-man senior class will be honored as part of "Senior Day" ceremonies prior to first pitch, beginning at approximately 12:45 p.m.
