SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Sixth-ranked UC Santa Barbara used a three-run sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie, and the Gauchos held visiting UC Davis to just three hits on the day, taking game two of their Big West Conference series by the score of 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
The Aggies, who turned four double plays and stranded five UCSB runners in scoring position on the day, dropped their fourth conference series of the year with the defeat, falling to 26-18-1 overall and 5-9 in league play. The Gauchos improved to 33-10-1 overall and 10-4 in conference play.
Nick Lynch's nation-leading 26th double of the year, along with singles by Brad Pluschkell and John Williams, was all UC Davis could muster against starter Justin Jacome (7-2), who allowed an unearned run while striking out seven in the win, facing just three over the minimum in his eight innings of work.
Senior Raul Jacobson (4-3) was charged with the loss for the Aggies, allowing the four runs on nine hits and striking out a pair over 5.1 innings. Nat Hamby and Justin Mullins combined to allow just two hits and struck out three in almost three innings of relief to keep their side close.
A one-out walk by Tino Lipson led to the first run of the game as UC Davis struck first in the fourth inning. Lipson stole second and went to third when the throw from the catcher found nobody on the other end at the second base bag. That brought up Lynch, who flied a ball into left just deep enough to plate Lipson, who deftly slid in safely around the tag at the plate for the 1-0 lead.
An RBI single by Billy Fredrick in the home half of the inning tied the game, and the score remained that way until the decisive sixth, when Peter Maris' first home run of the season to lead-off the inning gave the Gauchos the go-ahead run. A run-scoring single by Luke Swenson and a ground out by Austin Bush gave UC Santa Barbara some breathing room.
Maris, Swenson, and Fredrick, each had two hits for UC Santa Barbara, which held UC Davis to its lowest hit total of the season after the Aggies entered the series hitting .295 as a team and ranking second in the Big West Conference in that category.
UC Davis will try to salvage a win in the series on Sunday (May 3) at 1 p.m., sending junior right-hander and eight-game winner Max Cordy to the mound in the finale.
