LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Back-to-back one-out singles in the ninth put the tying run on base for visiting UC Davis, but the Aggies were unable to bring them around on Saturday afternoon as host Long Beach State held on for a second straight day, posting a 4-2 win and a Big West Conference series victory at Blair Field.
UC Davis dropped its fourth straight game, falling to 28-24-1 overall and 7-13 in league play. LBSU improved to 27-23 overall and 10-10 in conference play, taking a series from the Aggies for only the third time in eight chances since UC Davis officially joined the Big West.
Junior Spencer Henderson and senior John Williams each finished with a pair of hits for the Aggies and were the catalyst for their team's ninth-inning rally. After driving in the two UC Davis runs with back-to-back doubles in the second inning, Henderson ripped a single to left center with one out and moved up 90 feet when Williams bounced an infield single to shortstop.
Long Beach State starter Chris Mathewson (6-5), however, shut the door to collect his second complete-game of the season, getting a pop-up and a strikeout to end the game and secure the win. Mathewson scattered just two runs on six hits, walking three, and striking out eight in the victory.
Senior right-hander Raul Jacobson (5-4) suffered the loss, tagged for four runs on seven hits -- three of those scores coming in the first inning -- striking out five without a walk over seven innings. Sophomore Justin Mullins got through the eighth without allowing a run or a hit, walking one.
After a ground ball to start the home half of the first, a pair of singles, a double, and a triple, put Long Beach State on the board quickly, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. Following the rough start, Jacobson settled down, retiring the next 12 consecutive hitters before Alex DeGoti reached on an infield single in the fifth to end the run.
UC Davis scratched back with a pair of runs in the second to make it a one-run game as Austin March led-off with a walk, moved to second on a ground ball to the left side, and scored when Henderson rocketed a double off the wall in right to make it 3-1. Williams followed with a double of his own, dropping one down the left field line to plate Henderson and make it 3-2, but that would be as close as the Aggies would come.
Long Beach State added an insurance score in the sixth after a lead-off double, bringing him home with a sacrifice and a ground ball for the final 4-2 score.
The Aggies had their chances, stranding seven for the game -- five of those in scoring position and two of those at third base.
Junior right-hander Max Cordy is scheduled to take the mound on Sunday (May 17) in the final game of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Blair Field.
