LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Brock Lundquist's RBI single keyed a two-run eighth inning, the last of three unanswered runs to rally host Long Beach State to a 4-3 victory over UC Davis in their Big West Conference series opener on Friday night at Blair Field.
Junior Tanner Bily and senior Nick Lynch each finished with two hits on the night for the Aggies (28-23-1 overall, 7-12 in the Big West), the latter collecting his 30th double of the season in the seventh inning to set a new Big West Conference single-season record, breaking a tie with Cal State Fullerton's John Eccles (1986) atop the list. LBSU improved to 26-23 and 9-10 in league play.
Bily and Lynch hooked up for the first run of the game in the opening inning, as the former led off the contest with a double to left center, moved to third on a ground out, and scored when Lynch laced a single to left for the 1-0 lead.
After Long Beach answered with the tying run thanks to an error and a wild pitch in the third, the Aggies answered with a pair in the fourth to regain the lead. An error on a ground ball by Izaak Silva opened the frame and he would come around to score on a triple down the right field line by Kevin Barker to make it 2-1. Senior Evan Heptig made it a two-run game in the very next at-bat, squeezing Barker home for the 3-1 advantage.
Long Beach State scratched one across in the sixth with an RBI groundout after back-to-back singles to start the inning, setting the stage for a big eighth inning. Garrett Hampson led-off with a bunt single, was sacrificed to second, and scored on a triple to the gap by Luke Rasmussen that fell in when Barker and Bily collided in right centerfield to tie the game.
With the infield in, Lundquist worked the count to 3-1 before striking a single back up the middle, scoring Rasmussen for the go-ahead run.
Sophomore closer Zach Stone (3-3) entered with one out in the eighth and was stuck with the loss, allowing a run on a pair of hits while striking out two. Senior Spencer Koopmans started and was stuck with the no-decision, allowing one earned run on three hits while striking out three over six innings. Junior Spencer Henderson was charged with a run on a hit in 1.1 innings of relief.
Austin McGeorge (3-1) earned the win in relief for LBSU, striking out a pair in an inning of scoreless, hitless, relief. Ty Provencher nailed down his sixth save of the year, striking out one in a perfect ninth inning.
Four of UC Davis' eight hits went for extra bases, but the Aggies stranded eight base runners for the game -- five of those in scoring position, including a runner at third in the eighth.
Game two of the series begins at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon (May 16), with senior right-hander Raul Jacobson scheduled to take the mound for UC Davis looking to even the series.
GAME NOTES: Lynch needs two more doubles to tie Nevada's Joe Inglett (57) for 10th on the league's career list and three more to reach a tie for 13th with eight other players on the NCAA's single-season list... Lynch's first-inning RBI also tied him for seventh with Jason Wright (1989-92) on the career list with 119... With his two hits, Lynch collected numbers 70 and 71 for the year -- the most for an Aggie hitter since Paul Politi finished with 79 in 2012... Silva's double was his 18th of the year, putting him one shy of the single-season top 10
