MORAGA, Calif. -- Senior outfielder Austin March smacked his third home run of the season to nearly erase an early four-run deficit, but host Saint Mary's pulled away with three runs late to hand UC Davis a 7-3 defeat on Tuesday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field in Moraga.

Playing in their final non-conference contest of the season, the Aggies fell to 28-22-1 overall heading into this weekend's three-game series against Long Beach State in Southern California. The Gaels improved to 26-25 overall with the win, snapping a three-game losing streak to UC Davis and avenging an 11-2 loss to the Aggies earlier this season.

Saint Mary's plated a run on a passed ball in the second and added three more in the fourth thanks, in large part, to Matt Toscano, who knocked in a pair with a two-run single and stole home to make it 4-0.

Held to just two hits through the first five innings by Saint Mary's starter Anthony Gonsolin (2-2), one swing of the bat by March nearly rendered those runs moot as the Aggies rallied in the sixth. Kevin Barker walked with one out and went to second on Tino Lipson's single through the right side. After a strikeout put UC Davis' backs against the wall, March sent a 2-2 pitch from Gonsolin over the wall in right to make it a one-run game.

The Aggies put runners in scoring position in both the seventh and eighth innings, but the Gaels piled on late to pull away. Back-to-back hits in the seventh plated two more runs to give Saint Mary's some breathing room and the Gaels added a run on a squeeze in the eighth to cap the scoring.

Gonsolin earned the win, striking out 10 while holding the UC Davis offense to just five hits over eight innings of work. David Dellaserra allowed a two-out single to Evan Heptig in the ninth before closing out the game with a comebacker to the mound.

Freshman Matt Blais (0-1) suffered the loss, charged with just two earned on six hits while striking out three over 3.2 innings.

This weekend's series at Long Beach State begins Friday (May 15) at 6 p.m. at Blair Field, with games two and three scheduled for Saturday (May 16) and Sunday (May 17) at 2 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
