DAVIS, Calif. -- CSUN's Chester Pak finished 3-for-4 to pace the offense and four CSUN pitchers combined to hold the Aggies to just eight hits on the day, helping the Matadors salvage the series finale with a 3-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.
Senior Tino Lipson was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, while freshman Brad Pluschkell added a pair of hits, for UC Davis, which fell to 28-21-1 overall and 7-11 in Big West Conference play. CSUN, which snapped a three-game losing streak with the win, improved to 28-22 overall and 7-14 in league play.
An RBI double by Yusuke Akotoshi and an infield single by Nick Blaser got the Matadors on the board first with a pair of runs in the fifth, before the Aggies got one back to make it a one-run game in the home half. Pluschkell singled with one out, was sacrificed to second, and scored on Lipson's soaring double off the left field fence to make it 2-1.
William Colantono quickly added an insurance run for CSUN in the sixth, plating Nolan Bumstead with an RBI single through the left side in the sixth after the Matadors had loaded the bases against UC Davis starter Max Cordy (8-3). Spencer Henderson came on to get a fly ball before Colantono's single, but escaped any further damage with a lineout to Lipson at second and a strikeout to end the inning.
Henderson and closer Zach Stone combined for four shutout innings of relief, but the Aggies' offense was stymied the rest of the way as the Matador bullpen faced just one over the minimum from the sixth inning on, allowing only John Williams' infield single with two outs in the ninth.
Rayne Raven allowed a single run on six hits while striking out a pair over 4.2 innings, but was stuck with the no-decision. Angel Rodriguez (2-0) picked up the win for CSUN, allowing just one hit and striking out two in 2.1 innings of relief, while Conner O'Neil picked up his eighth save of the year, striking out the side around Williams' single.
Lipson logged his team-best 19th multi-hit game of the year -- including his sixth with three-or-more hits -- and moved into ninth place on the UC Davis career list with 204.
The Aggies return to the diamond on Tuesday (May 12) with their final midweek game of the season at Saint Mary's. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. UC Davis then resumes Big West play with a three-game series at Long Beach State on May 15-17.
