SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Campbell Wear's two-out double in the sixth scored Andrew Calica to break a two-all tie and lift No. 6 UC Santa Barbara to a narrow 3-2 victory over UC Davis in their Big West Conference series opener on Friday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
The loss snapped the Aggies' five-game winning streak, dropping them to 26-17-1 overall and 5-8 in league play, while the Gauchos posted their eighth straight win in the series, improving to 32-10-1 overall and 9-4 in the Big West.
A one-out RBI double by junior Tanner Bily and a run-scoring ground ball by Nick Lynch in the fifth gave UC Davis its first lead of the day, erasing a one-run deficit after a first-inning sacrifice fly put UCSB on the board to start the game.
The Gauchos rallied to tie it in their half of the fifth inning as Woody Woodward reached on a one-out single and moved to third on Peter Maris' single through the left side. After a walk loaded the bases, the Aggies almost escaped the inning with the lead intact, but Cameron Newell beat out a fielder's choice that missed being an inning-ending double play by a step, scoring Woodward to make it 2-2.
Calica the led-off Santa Barbara's winning rally with a one-out single, moving all the way to third on a pair of wild pitches. After a strikeout for the second out, Wear worked the count full before ripping a double left on the 10th pitch of the at-bat, scoring Calica easily for the lead.
UC Davis got singles from Evan Heptig and John Williams in the seventh and ninth innings, respectively, but could not rally home the tying run as starter Dillon Tate (7-3) and Kyle Nelson combined to shut the door.
Senior right-hander Spencer Koopmans (5-4) suffered the loss for UC Davis, allowing the three runs on eight hits while striking out five over six innings. Nat Hamby and Blake Peters combined to throw a pair of shutout innings, stranding three runners in that span -- two of those in scoring position -- to keep it a one-run contest.
Tate struck out seven over eight innings for the Gauchos in the win, allowing the two runs on five hits, before Nelson came in to clinch his first save of the year, striking out a pair in the ninth around Williams' single. Williams led the Aggies with a 2-for-4 day -- his 11th multi-hit game of the year while extending his hitting streak to eight games.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Saturday (May 2) at 2 p.m., with senior right-hander Raul Jacobson scheduled to take the mound for UC Davis.
