Big innings sink Aggies in Honolulu

Box Score April 5, 2015

Box Score

HONOLULU -- Alan Baldwin and Eric Ramirez each finished with three hits to power a 13-hit Hawai'i attack and the Rainbow Warriors swept a Big West Conference series from visiting UC Davis thanks to an 8-4 win on a rainy Saturday night at Les Murakami Stadium in Honolulu.

The Aggies fell to 18-10-1 overall on the year and 3-3 in Big West play, dropping their first series of the season and losing three straight games for the first time in 2015. After losing four straight, Hawai'i improved to 12-19 overall and 3-3 in league play.

The two teams will meet in a non-conference game on Sunday afternoon at 4:05 p.m. PT to close out the weekend.

Battling the elements for most of the night, senior right-hander Raul Jacobson (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season, charged with six runs on nine hits while striking out three over 5.1 innings of work. Jarrett Arakawa (2-0) earned the win, allowing just three earned on six hits and striking out three, retiring 10 of 12 batters at one point, and getting a pair of double plays, from the second through the fifth to stymie the UC Davis bats.

A Tanner Bily lead-off double and a single to left by Austin March got the Aggies on the board quickly in the first, while the UC Davis offense continued to pour it on during a two-run second, as a single by Izaak Silva and an error allowed Mason Novak to reach with nobody out. After a sacrifice by Alex Aguiar, John Williams dropped a single into left center, scoring both for a 3-0 lead.

The advantage didn't last long as two more big innings from the Rainbow Warriors brought them back. J.J. Kitaoka drove home the first run with a one-out single and Jacob Sheldon-Collins dealt the big blow with a two-run double down the left field line to tie the game at 3-3.

Hawai'i wasn't done, pushing across the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the home half of the third and Eric Ramirez drove home two more runs with a double to the gap in left center, making it 6-3, and the Rainbow Warriors never looked back.

The Aggies got back to within two runs on an RBI double by Silva in the sixth, but Hawai'i closed out the game with single runs in the seventh and eighth to cap the scoring.

Silva finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while five other UC Davis batters finished with hits on the night. The senior logged his eighth multi-hit game of the season, moving him into a tie with March for third on the team.

Senior Tino Lipson was held hitless on the night, bringing to an end his team-best 13-game hitting streak. Senior Nick Lynch, who went 1-for-4, now holds the longest active hitting streak at six games.
