STOCKTON, Calif. -- Senior Austin March homered twice and drove in five, while junior Cameron Olson finished 4-for-4 with his first home run of the season and three runs scored, powering UC Davis to an 11-5 victory and a series sweep of Pacific on Sunday afternoon at Klein Family Field in Stockton, Calif.
The Aggies posted their second series sweep of the year, improving to 25-16-1 overall and extending their winning streak to four behind 15 hits from the offense and multiple runs in three of their four scoring innings. The Tigers fell to 9-32 overall, falling for the fifth consecutive game.
A three-run shot in the first by March put the Aggies on the board to stay and the senior added a towering two-run shot in the fifth for the second multi-homer game by a UC Davis batter this season (Nick Lynch vs. Nevada on March 10). Olson added a solo shot as part of his big day in the seventh, giving the Aggies their first three-homer game since Feb. 22, 2014, against Kansas State when Lynch went deep twice and Olson added a two-run shot.
Max Cordy (8-2) earned the win thanks to the tremendous run support, going five innings while allowing four earned on eight hits and striking out three. With the win, Cordy became the first Aggie pitcher to win eight games in a single-season since Brad McAtee (8-5) in 2008.
Nat Hamby then came on to start the sixth and picked up his third save of the year, going the final four frames and striking out six straight as part of eight consecutive batters retired. He finished with seven strikeouts on the day, allowing just one hit.
Cory Popham (1-4) -- the first of six Pacific pitchers on the day -- suffered the loss, tagged for seven runs on nine hits in 3.1 innings of work.
March's shot in the opening inning staked the Aggies to the early lead, but single runs by the Tigers in the second and third by J.J. Wagner and Nate Verlin, respectively, made it a one-run game. Three straight hits to lead-off the fourth, including a double and error on a ball hit by Olson and an a RBI single by John Williams, gave UC Davis some breathing room, while Evan Heptig added an RBI triple and Tanner Bily squeezed home another as part of a four-run inning to put the Aggies up 7-2 and they never looked back.
Back-to-back RBI singles for Pacific in the fourth closed the gap, but March went deep for a second time and a wild pitch later in the frame put UC Davis in double-digits in the run column. Olson added his solo shot in the seventh following a run-scoring ground ball by the Tigers to cap the scoring.
The Aggies' defense also came up big in a pair of situations, turning a pair of double plays with the bases loaded in the second and fourth innings, giving UC Davis seven double plays in the series and 14 in its last six contests overall.
Remaining on the road for their next five games, the Aggies travel to Santa Clara on Tuesday (April 28) for the second meeting between the two schools this season, before resuming Big West Conference play with a three-game series at No. 7 UC Santa Barbara beginning Friday (May 1).
