STOCKTON, Calif. -- Junior Tanner Bily's throw was on target to Izaak Silva with two out in the ninth, cutting down the tying run on a bang-bang at the plate and sealing UC Davis' 5-4 victory over Pacific on Saturday night at Klein Family Field in Stockton, Calif.
The Aggies clinched their sixth series win of the year -- and their first since sweeping UC Riverside in late March -- improving to 24-16-1 overall. The host Tigers fell to 9-31 overall, dropping their fourth consecutive contest.
Senior right-hander Raul Jacobson (4-2) cruised through the first eight innings, allowing just two runs on eight hits until Pacific found a way to rally in the ninth. A single up the middle by Louis Mejia and a walk to Nate Verlin chased the Aggies' starter in favor of closer Zach Stone, but the Tigers continued to pour it on.
A wild pitch put two in scoring position for Justin Thaxton, who worked the count full before drawing a walk, loading the bases for Dallas Correa, who also waited out a full count before walking himself, driving home a run and making it 5-3.
Lucas Halsted was called upon on pinch hit, but was retired on an infield fly, and Stone struck out J.P. Yakel for out number two, bringing up Pacific's best hitter, Tyler Sullivan. The Tigers' outfielder fell behind in the count, but laced a 1-2 pitch through the right side for his fourth hit of the night. Verlin scored easily and pinch-runner Jimmy Boras rounded third as Bily unleashed his throw home, tossing a strike to Silva, who applied the tag to end the game.
Jacobson struck out four win the win, throwing at least eight innings for the second time this season and pitching at least seven for the seventh time in 10 starts. Stone was credited with his ninth save of the year, tying him for second on the single-season list with his total last year, while his 18 career saves are just one shy of Justin Fitzgerald's career record.
Will Lydon (1-8) suffered the loss, allowing three earned on five hits, while walking three. Sean Bennetts entered in relief to start the fifth and pitched well, allowing an unearned run on three hits while striking four to keep his side in it.
Evan Heptig finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and two RBI, getting the scoring started in the third with a seeing-eye single through the left side, scoring John Williams for the 1-0 lead. A Tino Lipson groundout three batters later plated Heptig to make it 2-0, and the Aggies added two more in the fourth on a ground ball by Brad Pluschkell and a Heptig single for a 4-0 lead.
An RBI single by Nick Lynch made it a 5-0 ballgame before Pacific began to chip away, getting RBI singles by Mejia and Brett Sullivan in the sixth and eighth innings, respectively, to set up an edge-of-your-seat ninth.
Williams finished 2-for-3 to join Heptig in the multi-hit club, while Austin March finished with a double and a pair of walks. Tyler Sullivan led all hitters, going 4-for-5 with a pair of runs and an RBI, while Mejia was 3-for-4, accounting for seven of the Tigers' 10 hits.
The series concludes on Sunday (April 26) at 2 p.m. in Stockton, with junior right-hander Max Cordy scheduled to take the mound for UC Davis.
